Hiking In Vietnam

Hawaii hiking footwear?

i live in hawaii and have been hiking for a little while now. some hikes i have done in slippers, and others in sneakers. however, i was looking to invest in some more approproiate footwear. we do everything from valley to ridge hikes, so a shoe that isnt hot is good. also one that drains well. my friend has some vietnam war looking jungle boots, should i get those? also the hardest trail we have done so far is the 3 olomana peaks, what difficulty would that be considered. any similarly difficult hikes to try?

In an environment like Hawaii (where cold is not an issue unless you are climbing Mauna Kea), I like to wear well-fitting sandals with a toe cap and good foot bed. Here is one that's highly rated: http://about.pricegrabber.com/search_attrib.php/topcat_id=12/form_keyword=keen%20newport%20-h2%20-boys%20-girls%20-trail/st=query

I have an old pair of Bite sandals that has a firm strap around the ankle for stability as well as a molded plastic toe cap, but they don't seem to make that any more. (I used to carry them for relief from my hiking boots in California's Sierra Nevada, and they made excellent camp shoes at rugged camp sites.) Still, that is another good brand.

I personally wear that type of a sandal with a thin microfiber athletic sock to avoid chafing my very bony feet, but if you have some padding they would be comfortable without. Because of the molded footbed you do not slip around going uphill and downhill.

I'm sorry I can't advise you on difficult hikes. I'm getting too old for those
