How can I provide the best for my dog on the plane to Vietnam?

My family and I are going to Vietnam for summer vacation, and getting my new dog before vacation.
But I heard that in most planes, dogs just get stuffed in cargos and just go in the the back of planes.
My puppy will be a young Japanese Chin, which are VERY fragile dogs.

I really want to bring along my dog, what do I do?

You can't take her. It's not even legal.

First of all, yes, the planes put the dogs in the cargo area which a) isn't pressurized and b) isn't completely insulated from the plane's exhaust. Therefore, animals in the cargo area are subjected to extreme pressure and are poisoned by the exhaust from the plane (essentially like sticking them in a garage with a car motor running... not *quite* that bad, but the same idea). Also, they're handled as baggage, ie: not carefully. 1 out of 4 dogs traveling on an airplane is killed in transit or lost by the carelessness of the handlers. Yes, 1 out of 4... 25%. There is a 25% chance you'll never see her (alive) again if you take her, especially on such a long trip (that number goes up the longer they're exposed to such conditions).

Also, there are laws for transporting animals. Most countries have strict quarantine laws... there's a good chance that going into Vietnam and back to wherever you live could result in your dog being quarantined for 2 weeks to 6 months (yes, 6 months... up to a year total). Also, if it's a puppy, that quarantine will be longer (assuming the airline will even allow the dog to travel... most commercial airlines won't allow dogs on a plane unless they have all of their vaccinations, ie: are at least about 6 months old)... some countries laws even require them the euthenize all young/non-vaccinated ("vaccinated" meaning full vaccinations) dogs entering the country. If you don't know about this until you get there, then there's no backing out... once the dog is in the country, you can't take them back home... they're under the country your in's jurisdiction.

Do you live in the Southern Hemisphere (ie: is it summer right now?)? When are you getting the dog? If it's a long trip, you may want to consider either getting a different dog when you come back, or staying behind and not going on the trip with your family. If you do take her and are willing to take the risk (which is really stupid and you don't deserve to have her if you do), then make sure you're educated on the airline's policies, Vietnam's policies, and your country's policies regarding dogs traveling/going in and out of the respective country.

But in my opinion, you shouldn't bring her. Get a dog when you come back from the trip, or don't go on the trip and stay with a friend while your family's away, so you can take care of the dog.
