Is Jakarta a good holiday destination.Tips and ideas needed.?
Hi, i am English and live in Vietnam and have today read the paper where i see Air Asia are doing cheap flights to Jakarta. Is it a decent place for a 5 day break and does it have a beach. Any tips or info would be helpful as i know nothing about the place.
I am Malaysian and i have been to various parts of Indonesia but unfortunately i have to tell you that Jakarta is at the bottom list of places i wanted to visit in Indonesia. It's just like other big cities in South East Asia, congested and polluted. There is no beach but many shopping malls, fancy restaurants, five star hotels, night entertainment spots etc. In other words, you'll find many man-made tourist attractions but very little natural ones.

Bali is the best and most famous holiday destination in Indonesia but it's quite far from Jakarta. Alternatively, you could visit Padang in the island of Sumatera. This city is scenic, facing Indian ocean ( no, you can't swim in it ), cheap and fresher air.
Nevertheless, since flying from Vietnam to Jakarta is easier than flying to Bali or Padang ( you need to get another flight from Jakarta ), visiting Jakarta will be fine. At the very least, you get to see how urban Indonesians lead their daily lives and at the same time trying the local delicacies.
Tips :
1. Be careful with your belongings especially those hand carried ones when you walk around in crowded places in Jakarta. Pick-pocketing and bag snatchings are common.
2. Do not give any money to beggars ( many children ) because when you give to one, you'll be swarmed by 10.
3. Wear light clothings because it's hot.
4. Ask taxi drivers the fares first before hopping into their taxis.
