I'm visiting Vietnam and Hong Kong soon, what should I expect?
What are really good resorts/luxury hotels would you recommend? What about the food? Shopping? Will I have trouble communicating with others if I only speak English? I feel a little nervous because how am I going to get around a whole different country. If anyone has been in both or any one of them, it would be so grateful to hear your opinions and advice!
I was in Hong Kong recently.
1) You will find it very difficult with only English language ability. Find some potential helpers in the expatriate community living in HK. There are lots of nice people. Try Craig's List Hong Kong, or Google for some others. There's also a street where a lot of English-speakers hang out too (Australians, Brits, kiwis, etc).
2) Shopping: it's a shopping mecca. Shopping is the #1 activity in HK. There are ritzy downtown malls where you can find the good stuff.
The cheaper, 'bargain' area is in Kowloon . . district caalled Mongkok. There's also a decent 'antique' market area. Just beware, the backstreets can be dicey. Unaccompanied young girls could easily get taken down.
3) The food is the best you will ever eat. I've been all over Europe and South America and nothing compares. Not even the best Italian food is as good as authentic Chinese food. (only mainland China is better)
4) Get around HK via the transit system and via taxicab. No worries there. Transit system is excellent and taxis are everywhere.
5). Don't stay in a luxury hotel, why? Get a mid-range or cheap hotel, no need to waste money on hotels.
6) Resorts? There are no true resorts in HK; no room. The whole island is a vacation destination. You should visit Macao for a day though, via the jetfoil ferry. If you really want a resort hotel, actually that is where they are because Macao is becoming an Asian Las Vegas.
7) HK must-do's: shopping, dining, the harbor ferry, the Happy Valley racetrack, Macao, day at the beach, the funicular ride up the mountain, Wenchiang (redlight district), and definitely the nightlife and club scene!
