Vietnam Weather

What are some good books that deal with the nature issues faced by US troops in the Vietnam War?

I'm doing a research paper on the Vietnam War, and on the challenges faced by US troops against nature. The weather, the terrain, the insects, etc.

What are some good books or online articles that deal with this topic?

I can not think of any books that deal with the terrain, climate or other physical elements of the war, and I have around 50 books on Vietnam and the war.

There are plenty of Historical books about the Second Indochina (Vietnam) War that you could read. There are others -- biographies and autobiographies that you may find interesting.

There is also the Time-Life series of books on Vietnam which has some material that may cover the area you are talking about.

Incidently, When writing about the war, you should refer to it correctly as the "Second Indochina War". There are several start dates for the war.
(a) May 1954 -- The Second Indochina War started before the First Indochina War (the War of Independence) finished. The US under President Eisenhower and Secretary of State, John Foster Dallas, sent CIA operatives into the northern regions of Vietnam to destroy Dams, Dykes, Oil and Coal depots, Railway tracks and junctions etc and other essential infrastructure. The US also violated every aspect of the "1954 Geneva Agreements on Indochina" which TEMPORARILY divided Vietnam at the 17th parallel until Nation-wide elections were to take place no later than July 1956. The US also installed the Catholic Seminary Student, and avid anti-Communist, Ngo Dien Diem first as Prime Minister then as President of the illegally created (under international law & the 1954 Geneva Agreements) "Republic of South Vietnam". Diem was a corrupt Military Dictator.

(b) 1956 -- When the elections were not held in the southern region of Vietnam, under the control of Diem, people started to protest. Diem violently suppressed the dissidents.

(c) 1959 -- In December 1959 there was a conference held just outside of Saigon where Lawyers, Trade Union Officials, Buddhist Monks, Nationalists, Communists, former Viet Minh (allies of the US during 1944-1945) and enemies of France and the US (1947-1954). At this conference the "National Liberation Force of Southern Vietnam" (NLF) was created.

(d) 1960 -- Some six months after the creation of the NLF, the first official attack by the NLF against the "Armed Forces of Southern Vietnam" (ARVN) occurred. The weapons use by the NLF were old WW-2 weapons supplied by the US, or weapons captured from the French during the First Indochina War. The NLF captured a number of US weapons from the ARVN.

(e) February 1961 -- This is the date the US Military use as the start of the Second Indochina War. It is when the first US soldier was killed in Vietnam. Actually, seven other US servicemen had been killed in Vietnam between 1957 and 1961.

I suggest you "google" the "1954 Geneva Agreements of Indochina" and read it. The agreements cover Cambodia, Laos and the three regions of Vietnam, (Tonkin, Annam and Cochin China). All were colonies of France until 1954.
