What places should I visit in Vietnam?
Hi, I will be backpacking with my friend in Vietnam during late May. Our plane will arrive at Ho Chi Minh city and we plan to have a 4-5 days tour before crossing the border into Cambodia.
Can you guys suggest must-see spots? And from where do we cross the border? Thanks!
Unless you can afford domestic flights, I would say 4-5 days in Ho Chi Minh city are quite a short time for you to travel to far provinces in South Vietnam. For example, Nha Trang city is about 450 km from HCMC. It will take you about 9 hours by bus from HCMC to Nha Trang city (due to road condition and busy traffic). There are many tourist attractions in Nha Trang but the distance is rather far and it will take much of your time. Da Nang, Hoi An, Hue, Ha Long Bay .....are farther to the North.
If you are on first trip to Vietnam, may I suggest the following itinerary:
1st day: tour HCMC: visit War Museum, Reunification Palace, National Museum of Vietnamese History, Ben Thanh market, China town etc ...enjoy local food and fruit.
2nd day: visit Cu Chi tunnel
3rd day: travel to seaside city of Vung Tau (about 120km from HCMC - 03 hours by bus - 1 hour 45 minutes by speedboat).
Alternative: for the 3rd and 4th day: you can travel to Mui Ne in Phan Thiet province (about 220 km from HCMC - about 05 hours by bus)
Alternative: for the 3rd and 4th day: you can book a green tour to a province in the Mekong Delta. (there, you can enjoy views of rice fields, water buffaloes, canals, life on river, fruit garden, and personally do gardening or farming ...)
5th day: back to HCMC.
You will cross Moc Bai bordergate in Tay Ninh province of Vietnam into Cambodia if traveling by bus.
You can find more info. on the above-mentioned places and other interesting places in, around and near Ho Chi Minh city in tourist's guide book.
Have a good trip!
