Should i go to the philippines or Vietnam for a holiday?
I travel to Thailand often. I have a Thai girlfriend and in Jan i am going to meet her parents in the North East of Thailand. after spending a few days with them. would would like to go on a week long holiday. I dont want to travel too far from Thailand. I was wondering if any body could advise me on the best place to go i would like a good nightlife and maybe a beach but this is not a must could you also give details of the cost of living.... hotels food beer etc. Thank you for your help
I am from the Philippines and have traveled to Vietnam extensively.
Vietnam, of course, is closer geographically. But nightlife does not compare in any way with the Philippines. Bars and clubs in Vietnam close early, and if you go out for drinks after a late dinner, you might feel like you still want to have a drink but the chairs are already being stacked on top of tables.
The Philippines offers the best nightlife in Asia Pacific, and only Thailand would be as exciting. You should note, too, that Vietnam, while it has opened to the outside world, is still a Communist country. The Philippines, while a Catholic country, is so liberal when it comes to nightlife. There are bars that open until the wee hours of the morning, and you will be at a loss choosing which bar or club or restaurant to go to next.
Beach destinations are great. Boracay is world-famous for its powdery (as in talcum powder) white sand beach. It is the party place in the Philippines. Accommodations there range from 5-star (There is a Shang ri La) to mom&pop type inns that can be rented for as low as US$20 a night. Beer in bars coud range from US$1.25 to US$5.00 depending on how upmarket the bar is. You could have a decent meal in McDonalds type restaurants or roadside mom&pop type fastfoods for a little over US$2.00.
If you travel to Manila, you can spend a night or two in beach resorts 2 hours away. Accommodations in beach resorts in Tanza, a costal town in Cavite, for example, cost about US$38 per day for air-conditioned rooms.
Most of all, it is easier to get by in the Philippines. Just about everyone understands and speaks English. The few who can not speak correct English will still be able to converse with you, even with great difficulty, and still be understood.
Hope this helps.
