vietnam saigon hotels"vietnam saigon hotels"
for those who has been to Vietnam, what are your suggested fun things to do there, best places to visit?

also any suggestions for not so expensive hotels we can stay at? were planning to go there January of 2010 in Saigon.

There are many places to visit and many tours to choose in Viet Nam.

1/ In the North:
Ha Noi is going to celebrate a thousand year of being the national capital in 2010. In there you can visit:
- The Imperial Palace Complex: The Palace has recently been found after centuries of being abandoned underground.
- The Ho Chi Minh Memorial Complex: The Complex is to commemorate President Ho Chi Minh, who declared the independence of Viet Nam in 1945. It includes the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, the Presidential Palace, his small house on stilts, and the Ho Chi Minh Museum.
- The Temple of Literature (Văn miếu) inside the former Imperial College: The first higher-education institution in Viet Nam, established around 900 years ago.
- The Museum of Vietnamese History: Just a place to have an overview of Viet Nam before proceeding to other parts of the country.
- Small villages in the suburban and rural areas outside Ha Noi: You can find exhibition of handicrafts and how people are making such things in these villages. You may also find very old temples and Buddhist pagodas (their establishment can be traced back to a thousand years ago).
- Ha Long Bay in the coastal province of Quang Ninh which is around 150 - 200 km from Ha Noi. I believe they organize tour to Ha Long Bay. You'll see an amazing view with thousands of islands and islots. This is one of the UNESCO's World Natural Heritages.

2/ In the Central part:
You should visit:
- The Forbidden City - the Imperial Complex in Hue: The Forbidden City was constructed based on the same model in Beijing (the Nguyen Dynasty adopted the feudal system from the Qing Dynasty in China)
- Temples, pagodas, residence of the feudal elite, and imperial tombs: To serve as the Imperial Capital, the Nguyen Dynasty built a lot of temples, Buddhist pagodas, palaces for mandarins. They also built many tombs to commemorate the emperors. Each tomb was constructed as a big complex with small palaces, lakes, walls, big entrance gates, altars, etc. The French marked their presence in Hue with a lot of French-styled buildings and bridges. All of these have given the city a very unique "architecture profile".
- The Lang Co Beach: I have never been there, but I've heard that it is a very nice beach. It's not too far from Hue.
- The De-Militarized Zone (DMZ): The Geneva Convention divided Viet Nam into North and South Viet Nam in 1954, and the 17th parallel was taken as the temporary border. Nowadays they organize tour from Hue to DMZ which is about 100 km or so to the North of Hue.
- Hoi An City: This city to the South of Hue used to be a trade centre in Southeast Asia with a lot of businessmen from Japan and China. The town keeps its unique traditional style of buildings. They organize tour from Hue to this city.
- Da Nang City: This is a very big city of the Central area. You can visit the Museum of Champa Culture in Da Nang where we present a lot of remnants from the Champa Kingdom, an ancient kingdom in our territory long time ago. They also organize tour from Hue to Da Nang.

3/ In the South:
Ho Chi Minh City (Sai Gon) is the economic center of the whole country with many places to visit:
- The Re-unification Palace: The Palace was first constructed by the French to serve as the Seat of the Governor-General of the French Indochina (including Viet Nam, Laos, Cambodia), although the official office of the Governor-General was in Ha Noi. When Viet Nam was divided, the Palace was named the Independence Palace and became the residence and office of the President of South Viet Nam.
- The Museum of War Remnants: The Museum is not to provoke the hatred, but to remind people not to cause any other wars like those in Viet Nam. This is quite impressive museum.
- The Cu Chi Tunnel: Vietnamese made an amazingly long and complex system of underground tunnels to fight against US troops. The total length of the tunnels is about 200 km, connecting all the hideouts in the area together.
- Can Gio Mangrove Forest: Can Gio is the coastal district of Ho Chi Minh City. It holds the Can Gio Mangrove Forest, one of the UNESCO's biosphere reserve forests.
- Miscellaneous sites: Cathédrale Notre-Dame, Sai Gon Zoological and Botanical Garden, Nha Rong Harbour
- Mekong Delta, home to a lot of agricultural specialities, especially fruits. They organize a 1-day tour from Ho Chi Minh City to the Mekong Delta where you can enjoy the pure atmosphere of the rural areas, enjoy fruits inside large gardens on the small islets on the Mekong River, listen to traditional melodies of Southern Vietnamese music, and visit the famous Snake Farm My Tho.
- Cao Dai Temple in Tay Ninh (North-West of Ho Chi Minh City). It is the central sacred place of Cao Dai Religion.

There are also a lot of department stores, restaurants, pubs, beautiful coffee shops, karaoke bars in Ho Chi Minh City and Ha Noi.

Have a good trip to Viet Nam!
