Travel Indochina Vietnam

Should I take my mobile phone (cell phone) travelling in Indochina?

In a few weeks I'm heading off for two months travelling overland from Vietnam, through Cambodia and Laos, into southern China, then flying out of Hong Kong. I'm travelling alone. Should I take my phone?

It seems like these days a lot of backpackers have mobile phones these days, but I'm worried that it would detract from the experience. I'm not sure that I want to have the ability to call home whenever I feel like it. I know it might be a bit more convenient in some circumstances, but if it was convenience I'm looking for then I wouldn't be travelling through rural China on my own.

But having said that, if every other backpacker takes a phone then I guess I should probably take one, or it might be a bit hard to meet up with other travellers on the road. Do most travellers have phones these days? Last time I went travelling was in 2003 and no-one had them then.

Yes why not. Sim cards are cheap here ($1-$5). There is nothing wrong to add a bit of convenience to your backpacking. It won't detract you, it will instead ease your travel especially if you travel alone eg. in case of emergency you can call to get help. Other backpackers take their mobile phone as well so... there's a good chance that you will exchange numbers and meet up later.
