There is no train service from Vietnam to Laos. For years, there has been lots of talk of running tracks from Ho Chi Minh City to Phnom Penh. There has even been talk about connecting Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam by rail by 2020. So far, it’s all talk as Vietnam has yet to have any east-west bound railways with the exception of rails to Da Lat. There’s plenty of bus service though.
If you know what you’re doing, you can get yourself from anywhere in Vietnam to Laos by bus. It’s a very long and dangerous ride though. I would strongly recommend spending the extra money and take a tour bus or a plane ticket instead of the standard xe buyt. A great place to start your journey through Laos is at the capital, Vientiane, as it’s the most populous Lao city and easiest to travel to. Avoid the northeast part of Laos as there is an ongoing war among some of the Hmongs and the Lao government.
A good travel agency or tour company can hook you up with what you need. If you’re in Ha Noi, go to the tourist center on the North side of Hoan Kiem Lake for a referral to a travel agency.
