On a whim I booked a flight to vietnam for 10 days, arriving in Hanoi and departing back from ho chi minh city. Considering I only have days and have to do a bit of travelling by train during that time, I don't have much time and will have to cut back on some of the places I wanted to visit. Expert Vietnam travellers needed to help me with my itinerary. Originally i was going to go to hai noi, sapa, ha long bay, hue and saigon. But I had three weeks initially.
Added another two days, so going for 12 days now.

I wouldn't skip Sapa despite the fact that it's out of the way. Hue is also really lovely and interesting, and Ha Long Bay is stunning. I think those would be my top picks out of those listed. I also recommend the nature reserve in Ninh Binh (just south of Hanoi) which has a great sanctuary for monkeys.
