How can I turn the colors of a photo into a monochromatic color scheme?

I would like to turn a photo into many shades of just one color. Like turning it into a black and white scheme but instead of shades of gray to have it shades of red. Or Gold. etc. BUT I don't mean painting on top of a BnW photo.

I have Painter 11. How can I achieve this?
