Trip Vietnam

What vaccinations and when to get them - for Vietnam trip?

If I am going to Vietnam, what sort of vaccinations would be advisable?
Also, when should I go to get them?

Contrary to popular belief - there are NO REQUIRED VACCINATIONS FOR YOU TO ENTER VIETNAM. However, thanks to the H1N1 issues, you could be detained from travel to or from Vietnam if you show signs of having the flu. There are also some common sense things that you should consider being vaccinated for just because you're visiting a less developed country. Here's my list of vaccinations that I keep current for my travels:

Hepatitis A - Keep you from getting sick after eating something.

Trust me on this - You WILL eat things there that can get you sick. Our digestive system is not conditioned for the unsanitary ways that food is grown or prepared there. Getting a Hep A vaccine doesn’t guarantee that you won’t get sick, but it is some insurance that you won’t get too sick. You should also take along Alka Seltzer, Pepto Bismol and Tums for immediate relief when the time comes.

Tetanus - Keep you from getting sick after getting scratched by something or have an open wound.

Just as you will at things there that will get you sick, you WILL get a scratch by something that can get you sick. A tetanus shot will keep you from getting sick.

Flu Shot - Keep from ruining your trip because you caught the flu.

It sucks being sick while traveling. The last place you want to be while on your trip is in sick bed because you were too stupid to get a flu shot. With the H1N1 issues, it would be prudent to get both shots and carry your proof of vaccination while you’re traveling.

(optional) Malaria Pills - Keep you from getting malaria.

The downside of taking malaria pills is the side effects. I took malaria pills one time and I stopped because I was getting nauseated, which is a common side effect. I’m taking a gamble by not taking malaria pills. Then again, I’m not squashing through 20 miles of thick mangrove jungle either.

Keep in mind that I’m not a doctor, and you should consult your own doctor for your specific needs. Good luck and have fun!
