So much has changed in the backpacking culture for the past few decades; what has been a backpacker's paradise before has become paved roads today. The sense of adventurism of travelers, backpackers or not is rekindled because of cheaper air travel prices. This has transformed the ways in which backpackers travel and their actual destinations. Traveling somewhere beyond the beaten path is already hard enough, but discovering a place secluded, inexpensive, and relatively unfamiliar is even harder.
Although Thailand is considered the number one destination for backpackers, other Southeast Asian countries are growing in popularity too. Travelers acquaintedwith Thailand can proceed to Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos and Malaysia.For travelers who have already been to Peru and the Galapagos, they can travel to Panama, Costa Rica, Argentina, and Chile.
In Africa, South Africa used to be the most popular destination but it has become an established trail for travelers. Now, backpackers prefer Tanzania and Malawi because they're more off the beaten track and as such, offer a more genuine African experience. If you want to venture out in places such as Vietnam and Tanzania, don't forget to secure Vietnam visas and Tanzania visas before your next adventure.
Backpackers from across the globe even have a budding interest with Eastern Europe. A rare example of its tourism infrastructure is the Ljubljana's Celica Hotel, a converted prison less than a kilometer from the city center. The hostel's bunk bed cells combine a clean Scandinavian design ethic with an artsy spin at low prices. From Celica, you can explore the beautiful Lake Bled.
Backpackers are also fascinated on China, Mongolia and Russia. The Trans-Siberian Railway is becoming the key route for travelers. Trains leave Moscow to Vladivostok seven days and 9,289 kilometers away. If you want to save on tickets, you could buy them in Russia. Being alone in a four-person cabin might seem dreary to you, however, you can break the monotony by sharing a cabin with three passengers who will possibly change along the way. This makes all the difference in your backpacking experience.
Russian visas are mandatory however, so you need to get one for yourself. Bear in mind that securing visas for your next trip is all worth the hassle and cost; the thrill of being in a new place, especially for the first time, is undeniably priceless.
