Best films to depict American life in each decade of the 20th centry.?
I am building a learning unit to combine American History in the 20th century with great classic films and books. What are some films that depict what is was like in each decade of American life in the 20th century? Here is my list. If your students were to watch one film to know what a certain decade was like, what would it be?
1900Citizen Cane
1910Sergant York
1920Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
1930The Grapes of Wrath
1940Casablanca
Saving Private Ryan
Shindler’s List
1950
1960Malcom X
The Long Walk Home
1970Good Morning Vietnam
1980The Day After
Deterrence
1990Hotel Rwanda
Your list is a good example of culturally significant movies of each time period, but most don't actually show what American life is like in those decades. For example, Casablanca, Saving Private Ryan, and Schindler's List depict Europe and North Africa in WWII (there's nothing of America in it.) Good Morning Vietnam takes place in Vietnam, and Hotel Rwanda is completely in Rwanda.
As an alternative, try:
1900-1910 The Prestige, Citizen Kane
1910-1920 Somewhere in Time, Iron Jawed Angels
1920-1930 The Great Gatsby, The Cotton Club, Fried Green Tomatoes
1930-1940 Grapes of Wrath, All the King's Men
1940-1950 Infinity (or the book "Surely you must be joking Mr Feynman"), Flags of our Fathers, Swing Shift, A League of their Own
1950-1960 Driving Miss Daisy, Rebel Without a Cause
1960-1970 Easy Rider, American Graffiti
1970-1980 All the President's Men, The Ice Storm
1980-1990 When Harry Met Sally, Breakfast Club
1990-2000 Singles, My So-called Life (not a movie, but a tv series available on DVD. The pilot is a good snapshot of American life.)
