Vietnam is amazingly safe. There is minor theft in the larger cities and you can avoid this type of thing by being careful and not flashing expensive electronics or money. Use common precautions like wearing money belts etc. but you will have no problems.
Main modes of transportation are similar to the rest of the world and all are quite safe.
Cheapest is the Bus. They go everywhere and are really inexpensive.
Train travel can be almost as expensive as flying but you get to see the country etc. You can also take the train at night with a soft sleeper and save money on hotels etc.
There are three airlines that cover most of Vietnam, Vietnam air the most expensive, Mekong air a new airline that I have not tried out yet that is somewhere in the middle on price.
And Jet Star air that is totally unreliable but super cheap. If you are not making a connecting flight or having to attend a meeting at a certain time Jetstar is the way to go. Just be prepared for them to never be on time.
