Vietnam Backpacking

3 month backpacking trip to Thailand/Cambodia/Laos/Vietnam, how much money will I need?

I'm planning on leaving next month for a backpacking trip. I want it to last around 3 months, give or take a week. I've done some extensive research but would like some direct communication with locals/people who have done this before. I'm from Canada so my budget is in Canadian Dollars. I am planning on budgeting $3,500 CDN for this trip (airfare, travel insurance is all seperate. Strictly for food and accomodations during trip). Do you think I can make it for 2.5-3 months on this type of a budget from the End of May-Aug? I've heard of others saying 1000 Baht a day is plenty, and I've also heard that the down season is much cheaper than the busy season. Are these figures correct? Do you have any other tips for me?

Thanks alot guys! I'm really looking forward to this

in thailand now spending the last year in the countries you mentioned plus 2 months in india.

dollar mentioned is US (get used to using it)

Thailand is expensive compared to V/C/L but worth it, more of a holiday. Street stall meal-1 US dollar/ 30B, average room 250B/ 8 dollar (girlfriend and i, fan, shared bathroom usually... can get hot). 1.5 liter water= 12B, beer from 7-11= 30B, travel bus bkk to samui= 600B. Lots to see and 'do' can be expensive if you start treating it as a recreational holiday rather than delving into culture etc. cigarettes 20 wonder (good) =35B. avoid tuk tuks at all costs, get in pink cabs and tell them to use the meter (half or third price of tuk tuk with no bs, locals only use them for very short journeys). use airport bus from airport straight to kh san road (150B)

Cambodia- great place. room with AC/TV/Shower= 6US, street stall meal $1/4000 riel, travel cheaper than thailand but more time consuming. beer= 0.5US cheap cheap cheap lots to do if a bit depressing with all blatent child prostitution

Vietnam- had the best time ever. bought a motorcycle in saigon for 300US (a rip off) and rode it 4000km into the north and then into laos where i sold it for the same amount. noodles on street 1US (fer), 1l fuel 1US, room $7 with tv/ac/shower, beer 0.5liter in cities is 3000dong about 0.16US!!!!!! amazing country once you get off the tourist trail... but learn a little vietnamese (mainly numbers to keep prices down)

Laos- absolutely hated it because of the people(i met). overcharged everywhere, only country in SEA where i have found collusion in businesses. Many paths hard to find.... one tourist trail. good for taking drugs in vangvieng but that is all. oh beer laos 8000kip/1US for 0.7 liter is probably the best beer in asia. street stall meal 1.5-2US and half as tasty as V/T. hotel sweatbox fan no window/tv shared=10US, buses very expensive. avoid at all costs i say

if you need any other info email me at mrpurcell @ hotmail . co .uk

cant be bothered to add it all up but i'm sure you will

would appreciate my first best answer tho.

oh Do NOT buy anything before coming here, no tours, no clothes, no bag, no mosquito net no malarial pillls, no visas it is all a fraction of the cost than back home

don't be a tourist (booking tours) be a traveller
