Holiday Ideas for February

Sometime in February there will be half term and many people will either be making for the slopes or looking for somewhere sunny to spend a few days or the week.  Which of our great range of holiday ideas will appeal to you?  To help we have broken the holiday ideas down into a three overall categories, you can start by going straight to the type of holiday idea or activity that appeals most to you.

  • February Winter Holiday Ideas and Activities
  • February Sun Ideas (Short haul and Long haul)
  • February Sun Active Holiday Ideas
  • February City Break Ideas

February Winter Holiday Ideas and Activities

It is by no means an exclusive list but here are some local and not so local February Holiday Ideas, perhaps for those that relish a bit of snow and ice.

Antarctica

Among most adventurous of holiday ideas Antarctica is an untamed territory of wild, natural beauty, as well as a land of superlatives: the world's fifth largest continent, the coldest place on earth, the highest average altitude, and the lowest humidity. The continent is devoid of a permanent human population, although what it lacks in the human factor, it more than makes up for in mammals and marinelife, wildlife and scenery.  On your Antarctic adventure holiday you can witness penguins sliding on ice, whales emerging from the sea and seals playing along the shoreline – all in their magical natural environment.  A huge variety of wildlife inhabits this part of Antarctica including gentoo penguins, leopard seals, orca and the humpback whale.  November is best for icebergs and penguins and you can see seal pups from December to February.

Sweden – Lapland: The Adventure company

Geographically, Sweden is the biggest Scandinavian country, yet has a population of barely nine million, leaving much of Sweden a haven of unspoilt natural beauty. Anyone on an adventure holiday in Sweden can explore masses of ancient, coniferous forests punctuated by crystal-clear lakes; discover more than 10,000km of trekking and bicycle paths; see bountiful historical sites, including burial mounds, churches and fortresses; or wander the preserved, unpopulated national parks of Swedish Lapland with the magnificent Northern Lights sparkling above.

Travel into Europe's northern reaches and explore the winter landscapes of Lapland. This is an active trip with plenty of opportunities to enjoy the snow-covered forests and discover the culture of the Sami people.     The Adventure company offer a five day family tours which includes husky safari,  snowshoeing, ice hotel, skidoos and other snow based activities and The Northern Lights (although these depend on the weather conditions).    There is also an adult only tour, which lasts 7 days.

February Sun Holiday Ideas

Here is a good range of different ideas for getting away to sunny climes during February, we have ordered it by short haul to long haul.

Egypt – Sharm El Sheik

Sharm El Sheik on the Red Sea is the door to a magical underwater world of technicolour fish and coral that draws divers from around the world, it is a very popular, and so far safe destination.   It boast a full range of accommodation to suit all budgets from self catering to 5 star spa resorts.   Temperatures will be around 22 degrees max daytimes on average in February and flying time from the UK is about 6 hours.

Gambia

The Gambia is mainland Africa's smallest nation, it is scenically varied, with sandy beaches, lush tropical forests, swamps, marshes and large areas of wooded savannah. The River Gambia, one of Africa's great waterways, dominates the country.  The Gambia is a birdwatcher's paradise, with over 540 different species. While the country's parks, reserves and up-country villages are a major draw for ecotourists and those interested in African culture, for many visitors it is the country's pleasant tropical climate and relaxing beach resorts which are the star attraction.

Southern Turkey

Sit at a harbour front restaurant eating fresh calamari and sun drenched tomato salad washed down with fresh orange juice.  Hike through the pine forests breathing in the scents of pine and wild thyme and oregano.   Just stretch out by the pool or one of the amazing beaches and soak up the sun, perhaps browsing a good book and sipping a beer.  Southern Turkey and resorts like Dalamar and Marmaris make an excellent February holiday idea, with a balmy climate and lots to see and do, while being accessible to nearly any budget.     Buy a package, or get cheap flights with the low cost airlines.  Flying time is about 5 hours from the UK.

Bali

Beautiful Bali is blessed with some of the finest landscapes in the Indonesian archipelago. It also has a unique cultural heritage making it a fascinating holiday destination. Choose from the resorts of Nusa Dua and Sanur. Nusa Dua is a purpose-built resort dedicated exclusively to tourists, with clean white beaches and clear waters. More traditional Sanur has a good selection of family-run restaurants and bars and is great for watersports. Take advantage of the regular public transport from Sanur to Denpasar, the capital. Ubud is the place for culture in Bali and is famous for its handicrafts and paintings.

February Sun Holiday Activities

For those who want to escape the Winter but are  looking for a bit more than lounging by the beach and the pool, have a look at some of our February active holiday ideas.

India

Stroll through bazaars, discover magical and majestic temples and palaces, learn about India’s colonial past and see its influences particularly the colonial architecture. Visit the Taj Mahal, the Holy River Ganges, the Taragarh Fort or take a rickshaw just for the fun of it.

India by rail Specialist travel agency SD Enterprises sells a one-month rail pass for anyone of any age who wants unlimited travel around India.

Tigers and The Ganges.  In the tracks of Mowgli The Indian subcontinent is home to more than 500 species of mammal, but to big game fans the Royal Bengal tiger is the major attraction. This trip not only offers an authentic insight into the great cultural and religious lifestyles of India, but is also a combination of temples, palaces, architecture and of course wildlife. Venture into the heart of Kipling country and visit two of India’s most famous wildlife reserves in search of tigers, the most majestic of all animals.

Maharajas, Tigers and Taj Mahul:

Venture into India on this 12 day tour, and introduce your family to the rich history and traditions of this fascinating and colourful country. This tour takes us to the palaces of Maharajas, past and present, and from small villages to the bustling city of Delhi. We visit the Taj Mahal, the tigers of Ranthambore, a camel breeding farm and wander around the forts of Junagarh and Mehrangah. A mixture of local transport includes camels, bicycle rickshaws and jeeps. We look for tigers and sloth bears in Ranthambore National Park, and we explore the beautiful city of Jaipur, also called the ‘Pink City’ - with its City and Amber Palaces. Discover the abandoned and ruined ghost city and ancient capital of the Mughal Dynasty, Fatehpur Sikri, and visit Pushkar – home of the famous annual camel fair.

Vietnam

This 12 day tour starts with classic Hanoi to Saigon: Your adventure starts in the charming old city of Hanoi, exploring its characteristic markets and backstreets.  You'll travel to Halong Bay (as recently seen on Top Gear and The Best of Top Gear) for an exciting overnight boat trip amongst towering limestone cliffs and hundreds of spectacular islands - a true fairytale setting.  Hué & Hoi An: Boarding the famous Reunification Express train, you'll head south glimpsing scenes of rural life from the train window before arriving in Hué, the cultural capital. Here you'll travel by boat along the Perfume River to the tombs of the ancient Nguyen dynasty. You'll have three nights to savour the atmosphere of the old port of Hoi An (our favourite place in Vietnam) so there's plenty of time to explore its colourful streets and riverside market, or simply relax on a nearby beach.  Mekong Delta & Saigon: You'll spend a night with a local family in the Mekong Delta and travel by boat along rural waterways. Finally, you'll arrive in vibrant Saigon where you can explore its bustling streets and temples.

Responsible Travel:  The Adventure Company supports the Binh Luc Orphanage near Hanoi with $5 per person travelling. They are also supporting the Thai Nguyen Children's Centre with $5,000 raised from our customers to provide much needed bunk beds.

South Africa / Kwazulu Natal:  Rhino watching & Zulu battlefields

Your adventure starts with stunning scenery and culture as you explore Bourke’s Luck Potholes, God’s Window, Blyde River Canyon and the preserved Victorian gold mining town of Pilgrim’s Rest. Next up is the famous Kruger National Park where you’ll head out on game drives hoping to spot the big five of elephant, lion, leopard, rhino and buffalo – not to mention zebra, giraffe, antelope and numerous species of colourful birds.

After stretching your legs in the Swaziland hills, the wetlands of St Lucia offer a completely different habitat to explore. The game viewing in Hluhluwe with its high concentration of rhino is fantastic. Heading back inland you’ll visit the Zulu War battlefields of Islandwana and Rorke’s Drift before ending up in the Drakensberg Mountains. These dramatic peaks and sweeping amphitheatres of rock offer great walking possibilities and you’ll have two full days to make the most of it.  Travel with The Adventure Company.

Sri Lanka

Boasting warm temperatures throughout February, of 27 degrees, Sri Lanka is a perfect destination to visit. The country has seven world heritage sites and is ultimately South Asia’s favourite tourist destination.  Natural wonders of the country comprise Golden beaches, abundant forests and rich wildlife habitats. The “Pearl of the Orient” Sri Lanka reflects a strong wealth of both natural and cultural diversity which spans over 2,500 years. Mountains and hills are rich in flora and fauna with waterfalls cascading down the mountains surround the four major national parks.  Sri Lanka never fails to captivate with its tropical beaches, diverse culture and ancient cities. Take a walk along a palm-fringed beach or jump in a canoe for something a little more active. Experience the romance, colour and spice of Sri Lanka, a truly remarkable destination that you'll never forget!

Kumuka offers three tours to Sri Lanka and visits all seven of the Unesco World heritage sites:  Sri Lanka uncovered (12 days);  Elephants,  Fire Walkers and Beaches (12 days);Action Sri Lanka (9 days) all with  optional beach tour 4 day extension pack.

Brazil - Carnival

You are greeted with delight, dazzle, and decadence when arriving at the annual Brazilian Carnival. People from all around the world flock to the streets of Rio de Janiero to share in the celebration with locals known as Cariocas. Starting the Friday before Ash Wednesday, seven weeks before Easter Sunday, Rio de Janeiro hosts many festivities that occur throughout the city complete with music, parades, dancing, and renowned Carnival balls. Many activities take place during the carnival, including events that take place before the actual four day festival, including parades and rehearsals. The various gatherings combine to create days of enchantment, energy, and enjoyment, capturing the true sense of Rio's Carnival. The Carnival is celebrated every year on a different weekend, the official date always being forty days before Lent.

During the busy holiday season, what is your strategy for keeping your home guest-ready?

Keeping a clean home during the hectic holiday season can be a challenge - especially with the additional details to deal with, like gingerbread cookies on the floor, holiday decor that needs constant dusting, and guests dropping in at the last minute. How do you keep your home clean during this busy time?

- Every night, tidy up your kitchen or the room that guests will mainly be in.
- Get lots of store-bought holiday cookies and store them in a hidden place in your pantry. Save them for times when guests stop in; all you have to do is put them on a fancy plate and you have snacks in a flash!
- Instead of lots of holiday decor in need of dusting, keep it simple. Use holiday napkins, plates, and display only one main holiday centerpiece, like a cute wooden snowman or Santa - it will be easy to dust quickly and will ensure that you don't go overboard with decorations. It will look very simple and classic.
- Use scented candles in your home. Nothing is more welcoming than stepping into a house that smells like cinnamon, peppermint, or pumpkin pie. The scent of your house instantly says effort, and candles are relatively low maintenance. This will also add to your decor.
- Keep a dust-buster, lint-roller, or a Swiffer mop handy in a drawer or cabinet downstairs so you can immediately clean up cookie crumbs and messes. In the same cabinet/drawer, you should also store paper towels and other clean up supplies.
- Start a habit (if you haven't already) of putting dishes in the dishwasher and not leaving them out all day, throwing dirty clothes in the hamper, and cleaning up after yourself. If you already do, talk to your kids and have them do the same; your house will look a lot nicer without dishes stacked in the sink and a pile of clothes all over the floor.

Good luck & happy holidays!

Mui Ne, Vietnam, the Perfect Place for Your Summer Holiday

"The most beautiful place in Vietnam is Beaches, and one of the top seaside around Southern Vietnam is Mui Ne."

When one talks about Vietnam's tourist attractions at Phan Thiet City, Binh Thuan Province, it's deficient if we don't mention Mui Ne as the most gracefully seductive sea cape of Vietnam. Just 200km north of Ho Chi Minh City is the small fishing town of Phan Thiet. It's serene and tropical, the perfect get-away from city life.

Mui Ne with natural beauty and recreation of the sea. This summer why not come here, you will enjoy the delicious seafood, and enjoy the various interesting activities, for example, swimming, sunbathing, golf, diving and snorkeling,  hunting, or hidden in a charming night life and relaxed with the live music or local sea festival.

The name "Mui Ne" meaning comes from the fishing people in the past get in here to hide the storm on their fishing days. "Mui" means cape, and "Ne" means hide. It features sweeping sand dunes and beautiful rows of palm trees. Tourists can easily be attracted by the deep blue of the sea, the golden of the sun and sand, all converging in warmth and purity, beautiful beaches gently sloping to the sea, gentle breezes, pure sea, blue sky, and cristine reddish sand dunes.

Mui Ne Beach:

Set in front of beautiful red sand dunes, Mui Ne offers more than 16 kilometers of once pristine coastline. The beach is shallow and sloped, the water is clean and blue and the sun rarely hides behind clouds. It boasts shady roads under coconut trees, a beautiful beach and cliffs battered by the waves of the sea. It is a precious gift of Nature, with the most beautiful sand – banks in Vietnam. The sand gathers together making the endless accumulated hills. With strong sea breezes, It has become the wind surf sports capital of Vietnam, kite surfing has really taken off here.

Mui Ne Sand:

Fantastic red and white-sand  dunes, which can be explored on a jeep tour (most often includes a sand-sledding session), are a must-see. Flying Sand dune is one of the longest sand banks stretching a series of kilometers and areas. Its name derives from the main golden color with the existence of hundreds of years.

Besides beaches and sand dunes, there are also beautiful landscapes such as Suoi Tien (Fairy Spring), is a shallow stream of running water that flows through patches of dunes with interesting sand formations on one side and vegetation on the other.

Mui Ne is an ideal place to rest and relax. You can definitely swim in clear blue water of the sea, climbing sand dunes. In fact, this oasis entertainment person of all ages, furthermore,  provides an endless inspiration to the creation.

Holidays In Vietnam

holidays in vietnam_2"holidays in vietnam"
visa for holiday in Vietnam ?

can you get a visa on arrival in vietnam or do i need to get 1 before i go , travelng from the UK

With the exception of the last answer I do not think you have had very helful advice. I have been to Vietnam 6 times in the last 4 years all travelling from the UK. I would advise as follows:

Yes - you need to have a visa in advance.
The cost has been around £38 but I suggest you ring the Embassy (which is located in Kensington, West London - nearest tube Gloucester Road) to confirm if you wish to apply by post. If possible though attend in person, you do however have to return to pick up your passport or pay £5-00) for it to be posted. I have had mistakes made on visas issued before that were rectified when I was in the Embassy and this is an advantage of attending to pick up the visa.

If you need a double entry visa to Vietnam you must apply for this before you travel and pay the higher fee.

Take note of the opening times at the Embassy, I recommend not getting there early when it can be quite busy but later on, shortly before it shuts. Often then you will be the only person there and save a lot of time.

Links below - Embassy and link to download the application form.

Agents charge a lot to get a visa, worth it if you live far from London otherwise not.

Good luck

Nah, I heard it's quite safe there. As long as you stay to the legitimate businesses, I think you'll be fine... just like in other countries.

Holidays Vietnam

holidays vietnam"holidays vietnam"
what should i bring with me on my 4 week holiday to vietnam?

how much spending money (going with parents so not for food or accommodation).
I am traveling in january and in the north and south so what clothes
and we are traveling a lot so what for entertainment??

The South will be warm even in January
Clothes for south bring
short
t-shirt
flip flop
camera

The North will be cold so dress a little warmer

I recommend a light jacket and some sweat shirts

There are many places to visit in the North and the central. You can visit Ha Long Bay, Hue the old capital, one leg temple, You can visit Phu Quoc Island.

Ho Chi Minh is more city life so you can visit a few famous night club like Volcanoes, Club #1, Diamond Club. You can also do souvenir shopping in district 1 and find some of the best ice cream shop along the main road.

Beach Holidays Cheap

beach holidays cheap"beach holidays cheap"
Cheap, beach holiday for 17-18 year old boys.?

Looking for a holiday for 6 people including myself. Looking to be away for 2 weeks from 09/10th of June with the total cost of the holiday, including spending money, not exceeding 800GBP. Possible destinations include Turkey and Bulgaria. A city with some nightlife would be needed. Marmaris is a possibility. Should we go Self catering or All inclusive? Where would you suggest we could go and have a good time?

Turkey and Bulgaria are certainly amongst the cheapest package beach holiday destinations from Britain.

Between the two I would suggest Turkey as being the better option for resorts with a broad choice of nightlife and indeed more people there for the same thing ;o)

If you are on a set budget then it has to be all inclusive. You are simply more aware of the costs right from the outset. As much as it's good to go out to different restaurants as part of your night out it's also much easier to start spending more that way as well.

Vietnam public holidays and special events

Politics affects everything, including public holidays. As an indication of Vietnam's new openness, Christinas, New Year's Day, Tet (Lunar New Year) and Buddha's Birthday were re-established as holidays after a 15-year lapse.

The following is a list of Vietnam's public holidays:

New Year's Day (Tet Duong Lich) 1 January

Anniversary of the Founding of the Vietnamese Communist Party (Thanh Lap Dang CSVN) 3 February - the Vietnamese Communist Party was founded on this date in ] 930.

Liberation Day (Saigon Giai Phong) 30 April - the date on which Saigon surrendered is commemorated nationwide as Liberation Pay Many cities and provinces also commemorate the anniversary of the date, in March or Aprit 1975, on which they were 'liberated' bv the North Vietnamese Army

International Workers' Day (Quoc Te Lao Dong) 1 May - also known as May Day, this falls back-lo-back with Liberation Day, giving everyone a two-day holiday

Ho Chi Minh's Birthday (Sinh Nhat Bac Ho) 19 May

Buddha's Birthday (Phat Dan) Eighth day  of the fourth moon (usually June)

National Day (Quocc Khanh) 2 September -commemorates the proclamation of the Declaration of Independence ol the Democratic Republic of Vietnam by Ho Chi Minh in 1945.

Cliiistmas (Giang Sinh) 25 December

Special prayers are held at Vietnamese and Chinese pagodas when the moon is full or just the thinnest sliver. Many Buddhists eat only vegetarian food on these days, which, according to the Chinese lunar calendar, fall on the 14th and 15th days of the month and from the last (29th or 30th) day of the month to the first daj of the next month.

Festivals

The following major religious festivals include Ihe lunar date (check against any Vietnamese calendar for the Gregorian dates):

Tet (Tel Nguyen Dan) first to seventh days of the first moon - the Vietnamese Lunar New Year is the most important festival of the year and falls in late January or early February. This public holiday is officially three days, but many people take an entire week off work and few businesses are open.

Holiday of ihe Deal (Thanh Minh) Fifth day of the third moon - people pay solemn visits lo graves of deceased relatives, specially tidied up a few days before, and make offerings of food, flowers, Joss stick; and votive papers.

Buddha's Birth, Enlightenment and Death Eighth day of the fourth moon-this day is celebrated at pagodas and temples which, like many private homes, are festooned with lanterns. Processions are held in Ihe evening. This festival has been redesignated a public holiday.

Summer Solstice Day (Tet Doan Ngo) Fifth day of the fifth moon - offerings are made to spirits, ghosts and the God of Death to ward of Fepidemics. Human effigies are burned to satisfy the requirements of the Cod of Death for souls to staff his army.

Wandering Souls Day (Trung Nguyen) Fifteenth day of the seventh moon - this is the second-largest Vietnamese festival of the year. Offerings nf food and gifts arc made in homes and pagodas for the wandering souls of Ihe forgotten dead.

Mid-Autumn Festival (Trung Thu) Fifteenth day of the eighth moon - this festival is celebrated with moon cakes ot sticky rice filled with lotus seeds, watermelon seeds, peanuts, the yolks of duck eggs, raisins, sugar and other such things. This festival is like Christmas Day for children, who cairy colourful lanterns in Ihe form of boats, unicorns, dragons, lobsters, carp, hares, toads etc in an evening procession accompanied by the banging of drums and cymbals.

Confucius' Birthday Twenty-eighth day of the ninth moon
