MICE (meetings, incentives, conferencing and exhibitions) have great potential in the domestic market and more and more domestic tourists are willing to spend money on high quality services and hotels.

According to Tao Van Nghe, chairman of the HCMC Hotel Society, all tourist businesses are now aiming at enhancing the quality of their services to compete with other neighboring countries. Even though this time of the year is not yet tourist season, hotel capacity has been 60 percent, 10 percent higher than in 2010.

Viet said the investments in premium hotels in the city will give new opportunities for Vietnamese to compete with other countries in the Asia-Pacific region. So is why the company is investing heavily in four and five-star hotels in the SECC area in District 7.

The Manager of Caravelle Hotel in Saigon said that in recent years, Caravelle organizes 20-30 different feast programs. He said that feast services have been bringing high incomes even though the input costs of the services have been increasing due to the high inflation.

According to him, feast business accounts for 35 percent of the total revenue of the hotel.

The Chef of New World Hotel, also said that the hotel room occupancy capacity has been lower then expected recently due to the high inflation. However, the hotel's feast services have been prospering thanks to the increasing number of MICE (meeting, incentive, conference and exhibition) guests and Vietnamese guests.

"We organize 6-10 special feast programs every year," he said, adding that the hotel can attract many Vietnamese guests recently, who regularly return after the programs to place orders.

Why are the top hotels in Saigon so expensive?

Given the supply and demand you would think that they'd just lower the prices to fill more rooms. I stayed at the Hotel Equatorial Ho for $70 per night (it was probably at ~50% occupancy) and the Caravelle for $100 per night (this one was probably at ~33% occupancy)... this was just this past summer but now the Equatorial is at $130 and the Caravelle is at $180!!!! Where can I book these hotels for more reasonable rates? What is the best affordable (~$60-$100 per night) hotel in Saigon? I want to go back this winter but at these rates I am better off going to Thailand.

Larger hotels are not as dependent on maximizing occupancy rates as smaller hotels would be. Hotels, such as the Caravelle, make most of their revenue from restaurants, banquets, conference rooms, bars, casinos and other amenities and are not completely dependent on hotel room bookings as smaller hotels not having additional revenue sources would be. That in mind, smaller hotels would be faster in responding to maximize their occupancy rates by adjusting their rates and/or negotiate a more favorable rate with walk-in customers. This really has nothing to do with Vietnam though. This is a common issue in the hotel industry worldwide.

Your other two answers are correct that you should consider negotiating your room rates every time you stay at a hotel. Unless you ask, you will never know when you will catch a break even at places like the Caravelle. You will be surprised to find that more often than not you will get a discounted room rate just by asking.
