Vietnam Backpacking Tips

vietnam backpacking tips"vietnam backpacking tips"
looking for backing tips?

me and a friend of mine are planning on going for a very long backpacking trip (3 or 4 weeks) in northern canada. there will no trails where we want to go and both of us want to truely rough it. we also plan on going late summer or fall. both of us have picked up vietnam web gear and backpacks (my friend is using her late uncles rucksack and web gear from vietnam). what i like to know is what gear should we be looking at getting? is there any experanced women backpackers out there who could suply a list for us to follow? is there any canadian/american military persons (male or female) who could help with info about packing a rucksack and what gear we should have? we have a list of gear from a book from the library but would like to have an experanced backpacker to help us. and any help about roughing it would be great.

Military rucksacks and webbing isn't really conducive to normal hiking as it is much too heavy and unnecessary overkill. And whether you're a woman or not the techniques for backpacking in Canada are the same. If you're not well versed in hiking then perhaps you should go on some training hikes in order to learn various skills and perfect your techniques, including learning to work together and if you're compatible at all on a long difficult hike. I think you might find that backpacking along a trail is difficult and satisfying enough that you won't want to bother with the constant attention to bearings going cross country requires.

Last year Ryan Jordan and his team hiked 1000 kilometers across the arctic tundra unsupported and carried only ultralight gear. http://www.ryanjordan.com/2006_arctic/
And look at the gear they brought: http://www.ryanjordan.com/2006_arctic/2006/05/expedition_gear.html
You're going to want to buy his wood stove, dry bag backpack, and UL tents I'm sure:
