ADVICE! Backpacking through Asia during Summer '10 - Vietnam, Thailand etc ..?

Me and my boyfriend finish university next year and are both really keen to travel through South East Asia, especially Vietnam and Thailand.
Literally have no idea about anything or how to go about booking it etc.
What can you advise? Shall we go with a company or do it ourselves? What kind of price are we looking at (£) and time frame? Want to start saving now!
Also interested in doing anything for the community etc as well as seeing the countries.
Any help tips or advice would be most appreciated. I'm just totally blind to all of this at the moment so help me please :)

You can surely do it yourselves, just be careful of the weather. You should contact a travel agent about getting visas and seeing if you need any shots beforehand. Find a hotel for your first destination so you'll be settled when you land, but from there on you don't really have to plan ahead. See where your interested in going and check out what accomodations are available in each town so you are prepared. It's very easy to get by on your own once you get going! I'm not sure in pounds, but you can travel very cheaply if you are on a tight budget. Even if not, 30 US Dollars a day should keep you comfortable and maybe even cover air conditioned rooms if you so choose.
