Hotels Ho Chi Minh Vietnam

What form of money should I bring to Vietnam?

I am a student traveling from America to Vietnam in a few days. I am on a pre-paid trip, so all of my hotels and base meals are paid for. We are in Ho-Chi-Minh city, as well as some very rural areas down into the Mekong River Delta. I only need money for meals/souvenirs and stuff, and I am supposed to bring about $300. What form should I bring this in? Cash? Travelers cheques? Debit?
Thanks, I think I'll be taking just cash... Trung, is it a student trip? What organization?
People are saying bring a mix of cash and travelers cheques... Is this a good idea for just $300?

LOL, I am taking a trip there, too.

Vietnam accept two types of currency: Vietnamese Dong and US Dollar. The current exchange rate is $1 = 20,000 dong. An average meal will cost you 5,000 dong, so $300 is plenty, but it depends on how long you will be staying there. Your $300 is equal to 6,000,000 dong. Congratulations, you're a millionaire in Vietnam. If you bring $300 cash, you can always have the local bank convert to dong for you.

By rule of thump is anything less than a $1,000 should be in US Dollar. Any money you have left over after the trip should be converted back in US Dollar again because Vietnamese Dong is almost worthless back in the US. As a sign of precaution, carry an internationally accept alternative form of money like a credit card or debit card. Theft is very high in Vietnam so they leave money invisible in the open where other people can see it.
