I’m astonished that no one answered your question yet, so I’ll take a shot at giving you the best answer from what I can recall from my years of studies.

Ha Noi sits in the middle of the Red River Delta and is also where two major tributaries of the Red River Delta connect. There is plenty of water and very rich soil, which is all you need to have an agricultural community with explosive growth. Also, the location of being in the center of ancient Vietnam makes Ha Noi a natural choice for being the capital of numerous Viet dynasties.

Ha Noi and the rest of the Red River Delta were settled by what would become the Kinh or modern Vietnamese over 3,000 years ago. These were Chinese descendants who lived in the mountains of Northern Vietnam and eventually migrated to the delta to farm the rich soil created by the Red River’s sediment deposits.

The Red River Delta (and Northern Vietnam) is constantly growing due to natural sediment deposits and land management to expand agriculture in the region. The ocean in ancient Viet history was closer to Ha Noi that it is today. In fact, Ha Noi and the Red River Delta had been underwater until recently when measured in geological time.

The Red River has also changed course while humans inhabited it’s shorelines. At one time, Hoan Kiem Lake and much of Ha Noi had been a part of the Red River. A levee system built over a thousand years ago is what keeps Ha Noi next to the Red River instead of underneath it.

Although Vietnam was a tributary state of China for much of their ancient history, Vietnam’s mountains in the Northern regions was a natural barrier which allowed the Viets to develop their own culture, society and language. They became distinctly different from the Chinese and fiercely independent. Ha Noi was and still is the center of Vietnamese culture.
