Hanoi has been inhabited since at least 3000 BC. One of the first known permanent settlements is the Co Loa citadel (Cổ Loa) founded around 200 BC.



Hanoi has had many names throughout history, all of them of Sino-Vietnamese origin. During the Chinese domination of Vietnam, it was known as Tống Bình (宋平) and later Long Đỗ (龍肚; literally "dragon's belly"). In 866, it was turned into a citadel and was named Đại La (大羅).



In 1010, Lý Thái Tổ, the first ruler of the Lý Dynasty, moved the capital of Đại Việt (大越, the Great Viet, then the name of Vietnam) to the site of the Đại La Citadel. Claiming to have seen a dragon ascending the Red River, he renamed it Thăng Long (昇龍, Ascending dragon) - a name still used poetically to this day. It remained the capital of Vietnam until 1397, when the capital was moved to Thanh Hóa, also known as Tây Đô (西都, Western Capital). Thăng Long then became Đông Đô (東都, Eastern Capital).



In 1408, Chinese Ming Dynasty attacked and occupied Vietnam, then they renamed Đông Đô as Đông Quan (東關, Eastern Gateway). In 1428, Vietnamese overthrown the Chinese under the leadership of Lê Lợi who later founded the posterior Lê Dynasty and renamed Đông Quan as Đông Kinh (東京, Eastern Capital - the name known to Europeans as Tonkin. The same characters are used for Tokyo, Japan). Right after the end of Tây Sơn Dynasty, it was named Bắc Thành (北城, Northern Citadel).



In 1802, when the Nguyễn Dynasty was established and then moved the capital down to Huế, the name of Thăng Long (昇龍, "ascending dragon") was modified to become different Thăng Long (昇隆, to ascend and flourish). In 1831 the Nguyễn emperor Minh Mạng renamed it "Hà Nội" (河内, can be translated as Between Rivers or River Interior) . Hanoi was occupied by the French in 1873 and passed to them ten years later. It became the capital of French Indochina after 1887.



The city was occupied by the Japanese in 1940, and liberated in 1945, when it briefly became the seat of the Viet Minh government after Ho Chi Minh proclaimed the independence of Vietnam. But the French came back and reoccupied the city in 1946. After nine years of fighting between the French and Viet Minh forces, Hanoi became the capital of an independent North Vietnam in 1954.



During the Vietnam War Hanoi's transportation facilities were disrupted by the bombing of bridges and railways, which were, however, promptly repaired. Following the end of the war, Hanoi became the capital of Vietnam when North and South Vietnam were reunited on July 2, 1976.



On May 29, 2008, it was decided that Ha Tay Province, Vĩnh Phúc's Mê Linh district and 4 communes of Lương Sơn District, Hoa Binh is merged into the metropolitan area of Hanoi from August 1, 2008. Hanoi's total area increased to 334,470 hectares divided into 29 subdivisions... with the new population being 6,232,940.The Hanoi Capital Region (Vùng Thủ Đô Hà Nội), a metropolitan area covering Hanoi and 6 surrounding provinces under planning will have an area of 13,436 square kilometers with a population of 15 million by 2020.



On August 1, 2008, Hanoi absorbed the neighboring province of Ha Tay, Vĩnh Phúc's Mê Linh district, and four communes from Lương Sơn, Hoa Binh, effectively tripling its size.

Planning to go to Southeast Asia in a few months for vacation. Trying to decide between Northern Vietnam or Northern Thailand and trying to squeeze in a side trip to either Laos or Cambodia. Not into beaches, more culture and sites. Probably renting motorbikes to tour. Which would you choose and why?

I never been to Vietnam, but wouldn't mind to go there for vacation, Thailand I have been many times, they are friendly and the cost of the travel is cheap but over the years I kinda gotten bored of going to Thailand.

At the moment Thailand has political trouble, I would choose Vietnam.

Chef Anthony Bourdain once likened traveling to Vietnam to "meeting the love of your life for the first time". Indeed there is something enticing about this country. Ecclectic and enchanting, Vietnam has inspired novelists, poets and other artisans for centuries. From the lush highlands of the Annam cordillera to the beaches of the South China Sea to the limestone karsts of Halong Bay, the diversity of Vietnam's geography is astounding. Nowhere is the renovated Vietnam more evident than in Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon). This bustling, exuberant city is endearing in its shamelessly entrepreneurial intentions. The sprawling metropolis of Saigon is an eclectic mix of architectural styles from colonial French to modern Bauhaus; while Ben Thanh market is a bargain hunters haven and a great place to pick up souvenirs. How much money do I need to travel through China, Vietnam and Cambodia for 7 weeks?

My boyfriend and I are planning a 7 week backpacking trip throughout China, Vietnam and Cambodia.
Basically the first month we'll spend traveling Beijing, Pingyao, Xi'an, Chengdu, Lijiang, Guilin, Nanning (and of course the sites around these areas).
Then spend about 10 days in Vietnam, visiting Hanoi & Halong bay and then make our way to Angkor Wat in Cambodia for 3-4 days.
We'll then travel back to Hong Kong and fly home from there.

We're not planning on staying in Hostels all that much, just inexpensive hotels and eating in mostly small restaurants and street food. We'll also use the train system as our main source of travel and probably buses for shorter trips.

I was wondering what kind of budget we should aim for? I was hoping for about $4,000 USD or less, not including air fair, visas, vaccines, etc (thats about $1,500 USD). Does anyone have any idea of the cost from experience? Any advice as to how much we will spend per day, etc?

Any advice would be appreciated!

Actually USD4000 for 7 weeks in those countries is too much if you are on backpacking travel. That amount of money will entitle you to some 'luxuries' during your travel.
Estimated cost - Non-star rated non hostel budget accomodations ( USD12-USD20 ), Food ( local or ordinary meals )( USD7-USD8 for 3 decent meals per person ) a day. Travelling cost ( short distance ) on public transportation ( excluding taxis ) USD8 should be more than enough. USD30-USD45 for train travel on economy class should be enough to cover a distance of 300-500 km. This is just estimated calculation. +/- 15% of the cost i mention should be OK to reflect your real cost.

Some places are more costly than the others. Beijing is the most expensive of all the places you mention above. The poorer the country, the cost of living ( and travelling ) is lower. Cambodia is the poorest.

This is just for Cambodia:
You HAVE to see Angkor temples in Siem Reap. Spend at least 3 days doing that, it is a huge area. Of course, you are going to run into a lot of tourists there, but it is still worth it..

Phnom Penh is a must-see also, it is like the wild west of SE Asia. Hire a tuk-tuk driver for daily sightseeing, they know all the main attractions and then some.

One of the best-kept secrets of SE Asia is Sihanoukville, a resort city in southern Cambodia. A lot of people have told me it is the same as Thailand was in the 70's. It has a very distinctive, laid-back atmosphere, and you can get a hotel room with air conditioning for $15-20 a night. Also, it is safe to rent a motorbike and just use that for transportation. There's still not that many tourists that go there, but that is changing fast. I've been there twice, and I loved it....

Does anyone know the law in Vietnam when it comes to modding your bike ?

I've changed my brakes and exhaust on my Yamaha and keep getting stopped by the local traffic police. None of them can speak good enough English but they seem to be suggesting that by changing my exhaust it is now illegal. I've asked a few locals but they tell me it is not illegal. What is the real law ? Please help

I doubt that would be the reason they're stopping you. Take a good look around and you will see modded up bikes everywhere. It is an industry here. What really gets on my nerves are these clowns who replaced the red lens cover on their tail light with a clear plastic one. Everytime they touch their brakes they blind the people behind them. It is extremely irritating at the traffic lights, especially if its raining and more so if you wear glasses. It is stupid and dangerous but the cops do nothing. I saw a young bloke getting around with a clear plastic lens cover in Nha Trang 4 year ago. Instead of jumping on the problem straight away the cops ignored it and when I left 2 years later there were several fools getting around with their bikes doctored in the same manner. Last time I was in Vung Tau I saw a couple of bikes down with the red lens cover replaced. One of the lasting memories I have of Nha Trang was seeing a cop go through one of the busiest set of traffic lights during morning rush hour on his way to work. He rode through a red light on the wrong side of the road, in full view of hundreds of people, punching a number into the mobile phone he was holding 10 inches from his face. A guy coming through the green light lost control of his bike trying to avoid him and went down(fortunately he survived). The cop didn't bat an eyelid and kept on his merry way still playing with his phone. In that instant I thought ''What hope the young people in this country? And man I've got to get myself a HD video camera" (Which i did.)

Discover Vietnam's Historic Reunification Palace In Captivating Ho Chi Minh

Originally built to serve as the palatial home of then president Ngo Dinh Diem, Ho Chi Minh's Reunification Palace is a symbolic representation of the historic fall of Saigon which ended decades of bitter conflicts between North Vietnam and the South and once more  reunited a divided nation. Constructed in 1962, the palace still contains the iconic Viet Cong tank that broke through its gates to the front lawn on that fateful day in April, 1975. Having survived several attacks and bombings from enemy fire, the palace took its current form after 1966 when it was partially wrecked due to assaults by South Vietnam's own air force.

Spread out over five floors this intriguing museum offers guests a tour that takes them through private living quarters, the president's office room, several dining rooms and entertainment areas including a lounge with a chic circular sofa which was built to host dignitaries. It is said that the structure also contained a casino in its heyday although no trace of it is visible now. A card playing room however is located on the third floor while the fourth is devoted entirely to dancing activities.

Other points of interest within the complex include its War Command Room which characteristically features wall to wall geographical maps and communications gear.  Visitors who wish to understand the role of propaganda media programmes of the era should head down to the basement of the palace where several rooms screen propaganda film clips that were aired during the period in a variety of languages including French, English, Chinese and Japanese. The palace's underground areas feature a complex network of tunnels with some even extending over to the famed Revolutionary Museum which was formerly known as the Gia Long Palace. Home to an observation room and a sculpture of Ho Chi Minh, the palace also contains a large conference hall where grand events and red letter days were commemorated in decades past.

February Winter Holiday Ideas and Activities

It is by no means an exclusive list but here are some local and not so local February Holiday Ideas, perhaps for those that relish a bit of snow and ice.

Antarctica

Among most adventurous of holiday ideas Antarctica is an untamed territory of wild, natural beauty, as well as a land of superlatives: the world's fifth largest continent, the coldest place on earth, the highest average altitude, and the lowest humidity. The continent is devoid of a permanent human population, although what it lacks in the human factor, it more than makes up for in mammals and marinelife, wildlife and scenery.  On your Antarctic adventure holiday you can witness penguins sliding on ice, whales emerging from the sea and seals playing along the shoreline – all in their magical natural environment.  A huge variety of wildlife inhabits this part of Antarctica including gentoo penguins, leopard seals, orca and the humpback whale.  November is best for icebergs and penguins and you can see seal pups from December to February.

Sweden – Lapland: The Adventure company

February Sun Holiday Ideas

Egypt – Sharm El Sheik

Sharm El Sheik on the Red Sea is the door to a magical underwater world of technicolour fish and coral that draws divers from around the world, it is a very popular, and so far safe destination.   It boast a full range of accommodation to suit all budgets from self catering to 5 star spa resorts.   Temperatures will be around 22 degrees max daytimes on average in February and flying time from the UK is about 6 hours.

Gambia

The Gambia is mainland Africa's smallest nation, it is scenically varied, with sandy beaches, lush tropical forests, swamps, marshes and large areas of wooded savannah. The River Gambia, one of Africa's great waterways, dominates the country.  The Gambia is a birdwatcher's paradise, with over 540 different species. While the country's parks, reserves and up-country villages are a major draw for ecotourists and those interested in African culture, for many visitors it is the country's pleasant tropical climate and relaxing beach resorts which are the star attraction.

Southern Turkey

Sit at a harbour front restaurant eating fresh calamari and sun drenched tomato salad washed down with fresh orange juice.  Hike through the pine forests breathing in the scents of pine and wild thyme and oregano.   Just stretch out by the pool or one of the amazing beaches and soak up the sun, perhaps browsing a good book and sipping a beer.  Southern Turkey and resorts like Dalamar and Marmaris make an excellent February holiday idea, with a balmy climate and lots to see and do, while being accessible to nearly any budget.     Buy a package, or get cheap flights with the low cost airlines.  Flying time is about 5 hours from the UK.

Bali

Choose from the resorts of Nusa Dua and Sanur. Nusa Dua is a purpose-built resort dedicated exclusively to tourists, with clean white beaches and clear waters. More traditional Sanur has a good selection of family-run restaurants and bars and is great for watersports. Take advantage of the regular public transport from Sanur to Denpasar, the capital. Ubud is the place for culture in Bali and is famous for its handicrafts and paintings.

Brazil - Carnival

Question on the Vietnam conflict?

Hi, I thought the Vietminh defeated the French in 1945 after the battle of Dien Bin Phu however, in my revision book it says the Haiphong incident took place in 1946? so am i right in thinking the french had been removed from vietnam by 1946 and resorted to shelling the cities from warships ? Thank you

Which hotel is better in Hanoi, Vietnam - the Sofitel Metropole or Intercontinental Westlake?

Intercontinental West Lake is a tremendous property, but because it's built over the lake - literally on pylons, you will be serenaded to sleep by the sound of frogs. Yup. No joke...you get used to them after a while.

Sofitel Metropole has a great location in the middle of downtown, but to be honest, its not worth the money. Sofitel Plaza (the old Meritus West Lake Hotel) is a better value.

If you're a single guy, go to the Fortuna Hotel on Lang Ha. They're a five star and have a Karaoke Bar downstairs which is legendary :)

Melia Hotel is also a great bargain 5-star.

In short, there are plenty to choose from. It all depends on what you're looking for.

What kind of clothes should i pack for a month in Guangxi Province in August?

I'm going backpacking (not totally hardcore - will be staying in guesthouses etc) for a month in August and will be mainly in Vietnam and Guangxi Province in China. I know it's supposed to be very hot and humid. Also heard it's the wet season but how wet is wet? I don't know what kind of footwear to take. Was having a look at approach shoes etc and saw some Merrell Chameleon Arc Web Sport trainer/sandal things that looked like they might be ok? I will be doing a lot of walking/trekking so need something pretty structured but quick to dry. Has anyone got any suggestions?

Polyester really sucks in that climate, so nothing with a high polyester content. And as for shoes, get a pair of Tevas, Chacos, or something similar--they're practical and pretty. You might also want to consider a pair of Birkenstocks.
