halong bay tours_2"halong bay tours" Halong Bay: How to do it yourself?
I've to wait for a visa extension to return to Hanoi so in the meantime I'm going to hit Halong Bay. Since I don't want to pay for the expensive tours being organised by my hostel and local agencies I've decided to make my own way and take my time there.
Does anyone know the best way to do it (buses, boats, accommodation etc) for the cheapest price?
Cheers in advance for any help!
You can go to Halong bay by your self by taking bus. First go to Luong Yen bus station about 3km far from the old quarter and buy the ticket to Halong bay with 4 hours driving at USD 5/person. When you arrive in Halong bay, you can buy a seat on the boat, there are so many people selling the ticket there.
But as per our experience, if you arrange the trip like that by yourself, the price will much much higher then you by a package tour at the hotels as everybody you meed on the way (bus, taxi, boatman..) will try to cheat you and sell you at a high price. If you bargain so much, it take all of your time and if not, you will have to pay for a very very expensive services with very low quality. So my advise is to buy a tour from the agency with only around 20$/person which includes everything (pick up and drop off at hotel, tour guide, boat trips, admission, lunch)
Enjoy your traveling

Its complex of caves throughout the island and mainland can also be toured. It is rumored that some jewels can be found in some of the caves if your lucky. Most of the caves have a substantial amount of limestone. Its many caves are an exciting adventure for any one traveling in Vietnam. Although Halong bay is full of natural beauty modern accomadations are not absent. Throughout the mainland and even on a few of the Islands there are many restaurants. There is also an abundance of lodging accomations including four start hotels. Many of the hotels offer tours of the bay that be easily arranged while booking a room.
Beyond Halong Bay’s geographical and geological characteristics lies a rich culture dating back as early as 5000 BC. On a Halong Bay tour, you will see what remains of how the early Soi Nhụ culture and Cái Bèo culture lived, fishing and living isolated from mainland Vietnam. To this day, Halong Bay’s inhabitants themselves are often a topic of interest for tourists. Around 1600 people still live here, separated into four fishing villages that live life away from the turmoil of modern society.
The climate of Halong bay is diverse though its geology is by and large made of limestone. The island enjoys a rich biodiversity with flora and fauna that is native to the bay. The region also showcases prehistoric human remains as well as various ancient cultures. These include the Soi Nhu culture of 7,000 BC.
The legendary Dau Go grotto cannot be missed while on a Halong Bay tour. Located on the Driftwood Island the name derived from when the Vietnamese placed large iron stakes in the bay to repel a foreign invasion force. The resulting driftwood of the ships floated into the Dau Go Grotto. Throughout the grotto many shapes can be made out of the rock formations. An old monk holding a cane is one of the more recognizable shapes. There is also an inscription ordered by an ancient emperor praising Halong bay and its beauty. Halong Bay is a historical and cultural sight that all world travelers should visit. It is the experience of a lifetime.
halong tours_4"halong tours" Going to Vietnam for 3 weeks in Dec-Jan where should I go?
I am going to Vietnam for 3 weeks with 2 teens and 2 adults! I was wondering where to go? We won't budget- mid range prices. What is the best mid range cruise on Halong bay? Thinking of going to: Hanoi Halong Bay(overnight cruise) Sapa Hoi an Nha Thrang Saigon Mekong Delta home stay/ bicycle tour Any other places that I have missed! Thanks heaps and heaps!!! *****We want budget - mid range prices*********** sorry!
sorry, can't answer your question about ha long bay....
however, I will say that I dont' think that 3 weeks is enough time to properly see VN from north to south.
I would suggest that you see Hanoi and Ha long bay and then fly down to Nha Trang, Dalat, Saigon and then the Mekong Delta.
You will be doing A LOT of travel if you stop in all of those places on your list and you won't be relaxing very much.
I just returned from 3 weeks in VN and I skipped Hanoi and started in Nha Trang and made my way down south. There are lots of great hotels. I used hotels.com to book all of my hotels (except in Can Tho). I paid approximately $45 a night which I thought was fair enough for the room and included breakfast. There are some good basic hotels which cost a lot less though. In Can Tho my Vietnamese wife and I paid $15 for a basic room in a small hotel.

halong bay_3"halong bay" Please recommend a Halong Bay Junk Tour?
There are lots of suggestions and horror stories out there pertaining to Halong Bay junk tours, and there are too many choices to pick from...
I am looking for a solid, mid-level boat for one night and two day trip from Hanoi to the bay.
Has anyone had really great experience that fits my description? Name your favorite.
Hi there,
Yes, there are many junk boats in Halong bay, and it's not easy to choose if not having recommended. We have been to Halong bay Vietnam twice and we still wanna spend time there more, it's wonderful. For your description, Hai Long Junk Boat is a good choice, or you can book a private boat from Anh Duong boat company, it's also a good junk boat with good price but the service is excellent.
hue to hoi an"hue to hoi an" Giving back in Vietnam?
My wife and I will be spending 2 weeks in Vietnam for vacation. We are going to start in Hanoi, and from there visit Halong Bay, Hue, Hoi An, Phu Quoc, and finally Saigon.
I feel very fortunate to be able to take an extravagant vacation and I wanted to get input on ways that one might be able to help while in Vietnam. I'm certainly not a high roller, but I definitely wouldn't miss a few hundred dollars...which I know could go far for many in Vietnam where per capita GDP is ~$1k.
Any thoughts on any causes that might put a moderate donation to good use?
Thanks in advance!
Please give you donation to an orphanage in Hanoi or in Saigon. Ask for address and tel. no. of an orphanage, make an appointment, come there, take a tour of the facility and living condition, give your donation (cash or materials such as blankets, sleeping mats, books ... your choice) in the witness of some peoples.
For Orange Agent Victims, already there is a lot of donations from local and international organizations and individuals.

We're travelling by ourselves (no tour group or anything) so we were wondering the best way to get there and then onto Dalat? Mini buses/train??? How do we book these? Also, our total Vietnam tour is about 18 days so how many days would people recommend staying in Hue and Hoi An? We're going to Hanoi, Halong Bay, Hue, Danang, Hoi An, Dalat and HCMC. Please Help!!!
i find the most pleasant way to get from hue [2 nights 3 days take a dragon boat ride see ming manhs tomb etc.] to da nang is by train.. its a short 3-4 hr ride. just go down to the hue train station and buy a ticket. another good way is to take a mini directly to hoi an.. but dont stay at the 1st hotel they try ro push on you its usuall on the outskirts of town. if you can afford a private car , that may be faster. unless you are staying at one of the beach resorts in da nang i would recommend taking a taxi or motor bike directly to hoi an [another 1 hr ride [ $5-$7us ]. spend 2-3 nights in hoi an , do your shopping early especially if you getting tailored clothes. hit the restaurants bars and cafes at night [ the town closes up early. go down to the cam island bridge [ found on all maps on the back of local business cards] down by the market and get some of the woman there[ they will find you] to take you on a late afternoon boat ride.. could be the best thing you do in viet nam.[ good for your first afternoon there] next day get a private motor or go on a tour to my son or marble mt [ da nang].. if you have time do one each day. ha noi, old town ,hoan kiem district is nicest and most convieint for 1st timers. 2-nights take a day trip to ha long. [you could do an overnight tour in ha long or mai chau valley ]leave da lat out you dont have the time and it pretty much sucks [ except for the climate and surrounding countryside] better to stop in nha trang taking a plane or overnight train from da nang . plane to sai gon 2 nights there is pleanty on your 18 day schedual...ha noi 3 nights , hue 2 nights, hoi an / da nang 2-3 nights ,nha trang 3-4 nights, sai gon 2nights alow a day for travel between each place theris plenty to see and do in and around nha trang you can add time there no problem. enjoi your trip.. and dont hurry .. you WILL go back!

Dry Halong Bay Tour - One of Best Vietnam Tours
8:30 AM We depart from Hanoi to Ninh Binh city. Enjoy 2 hour driving through the beautiful countryside of the Red River delta to Tam Coc, well known to tourists as dry Halong bay or Halong bay on land.
When we arrive, we will take a seat on a bamboo sampan rowed by the locals to explore the stunning nature-beauty of Tam Coc, one of the highlights for your Vietnam tours. The sampan will take you along the Ngo Dong river through three caves. Three means Tam and Coc means cave. The three caves in different limestone mountains are linked together by charming river.
12:30 You will have lunch at the local restaurant. Then, visit Bich Dong pagoda with three levels from the bottom to the top of the beautiful mountain. It is worth to see the top pagoda for beautiful scenery. After this, take about 30 minutes drive to the ancient capital of Vietnam. That is Hoa Lu. Explore the temples of the King Ding Tien Hoang and Le Dai Hanh, the leaders of two dynasties. Tam Coc, Bich Dong pagoda and Hoa Lu are located and surrounded by many of limestone mountains similar to those in Halong bay and this tour is called Dry Halong bay tour. Drive back to your hotel about 16:30. Now, you have fully understood why Tamcoc is one highlight of Vietnam luxury tours. The end of Tamcoc tour, one of the best Vietnam tours .
I have worked as tour leader since 1998 and found that many tourists chose wrong tours because most foreign sale persons do not really know Vietnam destinations. Therefore, they could not give the right advices to tourists. This makes me to work as Vietnam trip advisor as well. More information, please visit: http://www.luxuryvietnamvacationpackages.com
Ha Long Bay This is the premier sea kayaking trip in Asia. Start out in Ha Long city and spend seven days paddling through the emerald-blue water of the Ha Long Bay World Heritage site. Thousands of islands dot the seascape while millions of brightly colored fish swirl through the water below you. You can spend hours exploring the caves and grottoes sprinkled through the larger islands and marvel at the formations of the smaller ones.
Nights can be spent in a hotel on a different island each night as you paddle your way through them. Fresh seafood is caught daily by the local fishermen and prepared for your meals.
Cat Ba Island On the edge of the Ha Long World Heritage site, Cat Ba Island is itself a national park. Hotels populate Cat Ba city on the southern tip allowing the kayaker to spend their days exploring islands off the coat and their nights in the same hotel. Fresh seafood caught by local fishermen is included in every meal. Many of the fishermen will recognize you after a few days and will greet you as you paddle among the narrow rock channels to investigate the many grottoes.
Mekong Delta The Me Kong delta offers a unique opportunity for an easy paddle journey discovering channels containing floating markets and aquatic thoroughfares. Most expeditions start in Ho Chi Minh City and go on a circuit of small towns and islands in the river delta. The Cai Be floating market displays the handicraft of local villages while islands like Thoi Son wait for you to explore.
Ba Be Lake This inland lake has been designated a national park and is divided into three parts giving it its name, which means “three lakes”. Set in Northern Vietnam, these trips generally will start in Hanoi with a cross-country drive into the hill country to Ba Be Lake. Travelers can visit hill country museums in Hanoi to get a better understanding of the cultures they will experience on the drive and in the towns dotting the lake’s edges. The lake itself is generally calm; paddling is easy as you enjoy the tranquility of unspoiled jungles and limestone mountains. Accommodations are through a guest house sponsored by the local hill tribes and meals are always freshly caught. Ba Be is under intense international pressure to stop poaching and travelers visiting there help build awareness of this problem.
Preparation It is important to have the right visa when traveling anywhere; even when kayaking the bay. Visa applications to Vietnam are 30-day single-entry tourist visas and must be applied for at least six months prior to the date of entry. The visa specifies the arrival and departure dates but can be extended once inside the country. The application packet can be found at the Vietnam embassy website. Be sure to take extra passport-sized photos for the local officials if they request them. Carry your passport with you when kayaking for easy access in case you are stopped by officials.
Things to Remember Do not attempt to take a kayaking trip during the monsoon season in May through October. Weather for the rest of the year will be warm and you will need to take plenty of water and sunscreen. Most of all, remember to have a good time. Going at the right time of year and careful planning of the trip will ensure it goes smoothly and a little forethought will help keep you away from problems in the future.

hanoi to hoi an"hanoi to hoi an" What are the best cities/areas to visit in Vietnam?
I will be spending about 8-11 days in Vietnam, flying into Hanoi and leaving from Saigon. I'm looking for suggestions on where I should concentrate my time? Was thinking Hanoi/Halong Bay, then go by train to Hoi An. I've already spend 3 days in the Saigon area but don't mind spending 1 or 2 days there again. I'll either fly out of Saigon, or take a river cruise/bus into Cambodia for 4 days, then fly out of Siem Riep.
good itinerary as it stands, try to do an over night train to da nang [ hoi an does not have a station] motor bike or cab to hoi an [ $3-$7] 2 nights in hoi an, take a late afternoon boat ride on the river [ you can meet woman down at the cam nam bridge by the market who will take you out on the river]. take the plane [ or over night train]to nha trang [ book flight as soon as possible] 4-5 nights in nha trang, 2 in sai gon, and that would give you time in ha noi to either go up to sa pa or mai chau or take other day trips out of ha noi. phu quoc island in the south and phong nha caves in the north are very nice but defiantly out of the way and would cost you time you don t have on an 11 day trip. 2-4 days around ha noi , 2 nights in hoi an, 4 nights in nha trang [ there is plenty to do in and around nha trang] 2 nights in sai gon and 2 nights traveling between places.that's already a tight squeeze..be flexible in your plans AND ALWAYS HAVE A BACK-UP PLAN ! and if you go anywhere by bus [ especially cambodia] take Imodium and dramamine with you.
