any 3 day tours in saigon?

3 days down the ho chi mihn trail

I don't know about any tours in Sai Gon which explore the HCM trail and I'd be a little wary of anyone offering one. The HCM trail was not one trail. It was a series of routes ranging from foot paths to macadam roads. Once the NVA approached the South Vietnamese border, they would usually cross over into Laos and then down to Cambodia in order to make it politically difficult for the US to circumvent their supply lines. So basically, the HCM trail rarely existed in S. Vietnam. It wasn't like a fixed road or trail, something like that would have been exceedingly easy to destroy.
If you're interested in war history, there are plenty of places in and around Sai Gon to see, as you may notice when you land at Tan Son Nhut airport. (that was the main US airbase). Also, the former American Embassy is now a war museum, and a couple of blocks away, the former presidential palace is open to the public, the Rex Hotel was the Headquarters of MACV and the Cu Chi Tunnels can be explored via a day tour leaving from many tour vendors in Sai Gon.
Enjoy your trip.

Japan's tsunami shaking Vietnam's tourism industry

VietNamNet Bridge – The earthquake and tsunami in Japan has led to a series of tours to Vietnam having been canceled. Meanwhile, Vietnamese travel firms say no traveler has called to cancel tours to Japan.

The spokesman of the national flag air carrier Vietnam Airlines on March 14 said "the earthquake and tsunami in Japan has affected the flights from Japan to Vietnam." A lot of tours to Vietnam have been canceled. Right after the national calamity occurred, Vietnam Airlines flights departing from Japan were delayed. It is expected that the number of passengers who fly from Japan to Vietnam will decrease in the time to come.

The spokesman said that "the natural calamity will badly affect the air carrier's revenue, since the Vietnam-Japan air route always brings the highest turnover among international air routes."

Vietnam Airlines also said that "the unstable electricity and fixed telephone line supply in Japan has caused difficulties to people in following procedures for the flights." Vietnam Airlines plans to not collect fees from the passengers who change schedules for the flights from Japan to Vietnam.

Meanwhile, Vietnamese travel firms have confirmed that a lot of Japanese travelers have canceled tours.

Tien phong newspaper quoted representative of TNT-JTB, a joint venture of a Vietnamese and a Japanese travel firms, which has office in HCM City, as saying that "the travel firm's tour guides, referring to schedules, automatically go to the airport to pick up travelers, though they do not know if Japanese travelers will come or not." The representative said "the travel firm cannot contact the Japanese partners to update information about the trips of Japanese travelers, who booked tours."

"To date, we still cannot calculate how many Japanese travelers have canceled tours. But, we are sure the number is very high. Most of our tour guides failed to fetch Japanese travelers from the airport," he said.

He also revealed that a lot of TNT-JTB's Japanese clients decided to return to Japan sooner than they had planned.

Nguyen Thanh Son, a senior executive of Apex travel firm, complained that eight of the 10 tours slated for last weekend were canceled. He said that "Apex has successfully contacted the Japanese partners."

"However, we are still waiting for the information from the Japanese partners about if the groups of 400 and 500 Japanese travelers, who booked tours to Vietnam in April and May, would cancel the tours," Son said.

In 2010, Vietnam received nearly 450,000 Japanese tourists. Japan is now the third biggest inbound tourism market just after China and South Korea. In the first two months of the year, 92,000 Japanese tourists came to Vietnam, increasing by 130 percent in comparison with the same period of the last year. Japanese are considered high income travelers who have high spending level in Vietnam. Therefore, the reduction of Japanese travelers in the upcoming months will badly affect Vietnam's tourism

Regarding outbound tours, travel firms in HCM City say they have no tours to Japan at the time when the earthquake and tsunami occurred. However, they are worried that thousands of Vietnamese travelers, who have booked tours to Japan to attend the cherry flower festival, may cancel the tours. The departure has been scheduled for the end of March or early April.

"No traveler has canceled tours to Japan, but travel firms are still updating information," said Tuyet Mai from DI Fiditour, affirming that Vietnamese people have not traveled to Japan yet on Dau tu, because it is now not the cherry flower season.

"April is the highest season of traveling to Japan, because cherry flowers blossom in this month, which really attracts travelers. The tours to Japan in this month have been fully booked. However, due to the earthquake, we still cannot contact the partners. I think tours will be delayed until everything becomes stable," Mai said.

As for Saigontourist, Vo Anh Tai, Director of the company, said no tour cancellation cases have been reported, because the Japanese cities which Vietnamese travelers plan to visit were not affected by the natural calamity.

Representatives of DL Vietran said "the earthquake and tsunami stricken areas are located in the northeast of Japan. Meanwhile, tourism cities such as Tokyo, Osaka or Kyoto are located in the south. Therefore, he does not see high possibility of tour cancellation."

Help! What is the best way to experience Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnan in 9 Days?

3 male friends will be flying into Bangkok on Friday, Nov 12th arriving late afternoon. We will be staying in the region until Sunday Nov 21. We WANT to go to visit all the 3 countries and want to hear from people who've done this before. Please refrain from opinions or suggestions on the list of countries. I want to hear about logistics of transportation, accommodations, MUST see places. One thing I'm struggling right now is the direction of the tour - Thai > Cambodia > Viet or the opposite. (we can fly to HCM City/Saigon as we arrive and work r way to Bangkok)

Train vs bus vs flying.

Somewhat of budget. We don't need really expensive hotels, but we also don't want to share a bathroom with others (including insects!!)

Is someone can please provide or direct me to the right track I appreciate it. I want to have an itinerary no later than this weekend...

Thank you all!!

I have been to these 3 countries. Bus is the best way for you. From Bankok to Phnom Penh takes 10hrs from Phnom Penh to Ho Chi Minh takes 6hrs. I think you should fly to Bankok. Visit there for 2 might and take a bus to Siem Reap. Stay a night in siem reap and continue your trip to phnom penh then from phnom penh to ho chi minh. 9 days is too short. You'll miss a lot of wonderful places you should see it these 3 countries.

Did America Lose the Vietnam War?

This question was asked four weeks ago, but I wanted to put a different spin on it.

The reason I ask is because I am going on vacation to Vietnam in the fall, staying in the same city my Grandfather was stationed in as a Marine during the war: Saigon, now Ho Chi Minh City. America normalized relations with Vietnam nearly 10 years ago, and from what I understand, now they have a booming economy, expanding tourism, and an excellent trade relationship with the us. With capitalism comes Democratic reforms as we have seen slowly come about in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. Despite whether or not we won militarily is beside the point. Aren't we ultimately achieving the goal we wanted to achive during the war, but with capitalism instead of bombs?

What do you think?
hyungbinkim: Is it "equivocation and denial" to ask is one means of creating demoracy is better than another? I think you misunderstood the question.

It's really an interesting question. What you are describing of course is the "doi moi" policies instituted by the Vietnamese leadership back in the 80s, I believe, and that really took off in the 90s. But you should be careful about the "booming" aspect of these policies. It is booming....for some. Thus, .Inequality has worsened in vietnam and I have read studies where the caloric intake of the poor has gone down...many people rely on state industries and government largesse, which are being pared down by these policies.

You are right that the US may not have achieved it's maximal goal of militarily conquering the Vietnamese resistance and instituting a pliant government, but it in fact DID win the war by leaving the "communist" rulers with a country that was devasted, the countryside was destroyed, a veritable moonscape...millions killed (the US says 2 million, the vietnamese say 4 million) and then we continued to devastate them by blocking world bank aid, supporting the 1979 chinese invasion of vietnam etc etc...lessons that scared other peoples from adopting a form of government opposed to the US and insuring that the Vietnamese would come groveling on their knees for western support, on our terms (capitalist terms, of course) ...being their only chance of survival esp after the fall of the USSR...

Is the play Ms Saigon still showing anywhere, or touring?

Or is it completely ended? All of a sudden, my mom said she missed this play and wanted to see it. I am afraid it is not playing anymore, anywhere. Any info?
tagsmomm : I assume the play in Korea is in their language? Then I my mom won't understand.

Maybe the Atlanta run instead?

There's also a regional production at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta next year. My mom loves that show too ever since she saw the origional cast in West End.

When is Miss Saigon coming back to the UK?

It's gone on world tour. Is it coming back to England and if so, when?!

If it's gone on a world tour, that usually means it doesn't come back. Many shows have been on "world tours", and that's the last you see of them, unfortunately.
Starlight Express went on a "world tour" and never returned to the UK, as did Sunset Boulevard.
