Visit the Far East with Hotels in Saigon

Like many other cities in Vietnam, Saigon didn't escape the wrath of war, with Saigon having a traumatic history. Back in the 15th Century, this area was swamps, marshes and thick rainforest. At the start of the 17th century a small township was formed and the name Saigon was officially used in 1698. Various districts were created in the region and due to its strategic location for trade and commerce as well as military importance; Saigon grew in size and became a city, with many of the canals being filled in 1772 to form streets. When South Vietnam fell to communism in 1975, the new government renamed the city Ho Chi Ming City and closed its door to the rest of the world.

Would any one believe a U.O.M rescue 60,000 Nam P.O.Ws in 1987?

A lone unorganized militia (u.o.m) taking a lampoon vacation discover U.S P.O.W's in Saigon and began to rescue a few thousand he flew to the U.S others to other countries. He made a deal to rescue the remaining 60,000 P.o.w's to another non Asian country who work off freedom to other countries of their choice.
Most feared retaliation from the U.S because they were used as slave labor to haul the dyed color amputated corpse tourist from Hawaii.

No, and you need help. Joking about the Assassination of any President is sick. I'll let the USSS, and FBI, figure out if it's illegal.

Hue Palace

hue palace"hue palace"
Which stone can this be?

It has a light greyish color and when it becomes wet (like when it rains) it has a slightly reddish/pink hue. It might be used to build historical places like palaces, for example.

Which type of stone/s can this be, and do you have any examples of well-known historical buildings where this stone was predominantly used?

Without a photo it could only at best be a guess.
I would say though that it would either be marble, (does it have coloured irregular band running through it?) or limestone (does there seem to be little seashells in it?)
Marble has been used as a building material and especially a facing material for many different buildings all over the world and especially favoured for sculpting statues.
Portland limestone is used as frequently as a building material in London. I'm fairly confident houses of Parliament was built from it. The pyramids, the library at Ephesus and the tomb of Mausoleus were all constructed using limestone.

The Travel Bug by John Soltes: Vietnam

Vietnam, with its verdant countryside and bustling cities, has a lot to offer adventurous travelers and those wanting to put a face on the Vietnam War.

Ho Chi Minh City, formerly Saigon, is a metropolis that moves like the rapids in a river. Motorbikes putt-putt-putter down the avenues. Artisans sell their wares from street-side stalls. Teenagers line up to get their nightly dose of pho noodles and dancing at the local discotheque. Devotees walk to their churches, their pagodas and their shrines to light candles and incense for someone who came before.

It’s a city that seems endless. But there is an end to the throngs of humanity — a semi-quieter place where a few lessons can be learned.

On the outskirts of Ho Chi Minh City is a network of underground tunnels that was used by the Viet Cong during the war, particularly during the Tet Offensive.

Four decades ago, the tunnels were a harried place of strategizing for guerilla fighters.

Today, Coca-Cola is available in the gift shop.

A visit to the Cu Chi tunnels is chiseled into most tourists’ itineraries. Located roughly a one-hour drive (depending on traffic) outside of Ho Chi Minh City’s center, the underground ravines should be visited as a means to engage with the history of the tumultuous war. It is sacred ground that cost many a soldier’s life — and it should be visited with a respect for the casualties of conflict.

As tour buses pull up to the complex, the first stop is a meeting hall where cool drinks are served as plentiful as the propaganda. Before entering the tour, visitors sit through a video presentation that pushes the Viet Cong’s righteousness and the strategic mastery of the tunnel system.

You’ll probably get more satisfaction out of the cool drink.

Next is the actual tour of the tunnels, which stretch for miles or kilometers, depending on who’s talking.

In this particular area — in between Saigon and the border of Cambodia — where the tour buses corral like vultures, there are several holes that have been maintained for passersby to take a look and even take a descent.

Most groups visit the tunnels with an official tour guide, which can be booked back in Saigon.

Along the tour, you’ll have the chance to see grisly contraptions of torture, the place where the Viet Cong and their families ate and slept and a few demonstrations of what life was like in the tunnels (from eating fresh tapioca to an artillery range where visitors can pay money to shoot firearms such as an AK-47).

A group of tourists in front of me were clamoring at the chance to shoot a gun. I kept walking, slightly disgusted, to where visitors can crawl through one section of the tunnel (widened, rumor says, to accommodate larger Western tourists). The experience of crawling through the tunnel starts off easy enough — it’s kind of like ducking under a blanket to play in the dark.

But when you realize how far the tunnel goes, that the walls and ceiling are made of unsteady dirt and that the light from which you entered quickly becomes a pinhole, fear does sidle up next to you.

When you emerge, sweaty and panting, you’ll be thankful for the light in the sky.

Anyone who visits a sight like this probably has a curiosity for war stories and what exactly happened in this country in Southeast Asia. Visiting the Cu Chi tunnels may not provide any answers, but it may set you in the right direction.

It’s a preserved testament to days of sorrow. And for that, it can boast an importance beyond the ubiquitous gift shop selling war propaganda.

I need to get a tourist visa for Vietnam.. Anyone know of a good agency in the UK who will do it for me?

if you go to http://www.vietnamembassy.org.uk/consular.html the forms are there, you just fill them out and send off a sterling cheque/ postal order and your passport and you get it back in a couple of weeks. The forms seem fairly straightforward.

Well that's what I'm gonna do anyway but I haven't done it yet. I'm Irish but have to go through the UK Vietnamese embassy as they don't have one here.

Can I get a tourist visa for Vietnam at the Border?

I am doing a tour of Bangkok, Cambodia and Vietnam in September and I was just wondering can I get a tourist visa for Vietnam at the border, or do I have to apply before I leave? I'll only be staying for about 5 days, and I hold a New Zealand passport.

Cheers

Ong Jon is correct, but let me elaborate.

Vietnam just approved a means to obtain a visa when you arrive in country. Although technically available, the immigration officers will give you a hard time until they see enough greenbacks to satisfy their immediate economic needs. The payoff is about $20 US above the $60 for the tourist visa fees. Although it's a rather small payoff, it doesn't cover cleaning the poop out of your pants created from the immigration office threats to deport you.

Some friends of mine recently went through that nightmare, and will never do it again. Ong Jon is correct, get your visas before you travel to avoid the headaches.

Halong Bay Wants Chinese Tourists - Vietnam tours

Halong Bay, Vietnam is already a popular tourist destination, especially among visitors who come there on a Halong Bay cruise to enjoy the many sites. Recently, Halong Bay, which is located in Vietnam's Northern Province of Quang Ninh, has launched a campaign to attract more Chinese tourists.

Recently, the directors of 11 tourism departments from southern China, as well as representatives of travel agencies and tourism service companies from both China and Vietnam, traveled to Halong Bay to talk about ways the number of tourists from China can boom.

Travel to Halong Bay has increased over the years with the many luxury cruises to Halong Bay from European companies. In recent months, thousands of visitors have arrived, thanks to packages to Halong Bay. As Vietnam's economy grows, there can only be more visitors taking a boat into Halong Bay. And, with the booming Chinese economy, the number of these tourists is going to also be from Asia.

Currently, one ship arrives daily from southern China carrying some 700 passengers to the bay, but that number can grow and grow if the economic trends continue.

Since Halong Bay was nominated in a global online competition to be named as one of seven Natural Wonders of the World, there have been increasing numbers of tourists and more Halong Bay boats are coming to the day. For the top flight customers, there are many luxury cruises available for Halong Bay or, for the Asian customers, luxury junks that travel along Halong Bay.

According to the Quang Ninh Tourism Department, nearly 2.2 million foreign and local tourists traveled Halong Bay, in the first half of this year, up 32 percent. Of the tourists, 767,500 are from other countries, mostly China, South Korea and France.

What makes Halong Bay so popular? It's unique geography, definitely.

The bay contains more than 1,900 limestone monolithic islands, which are stunning to look at and each is topped with thick jungle vegetation. Several of the islands contain enormous caves, which are themselves worth the visit and worth a scuba diving lesson or two. Wooden Stakes Cave is the largest grotto in the Halong area. Its three chambers contain numerous stalactites and stalagmites. There are two other big islands, Tuan Chau and Cat Ba, where there are actually inhabitants and are tourist sites in their own right, which include hotels and beaches. The smaller islands also have interesting beaches.

Many of the islands support floating villages for local fishermen, who fish for some of the more than 200 species of fish and 450 different mollusks. There are still a little fewer than 2,000 villagers who live in the area, but most of the inhabitants now cater to the tourism industry.

If it all works out with the targeted push to get more Chinese tourists, there may need to be more workers show up in Halong Bay. It can be seen that there would be a lot of traffic (especially more than one boat), which are bringing people from southern China to the bay.

How much is a one month Vietnam tourist visa from Australia?

Does anyone have recent details about visa fees to visit Vietnam from Australia. I know that you are meant to call the Embassy, but I have been trying for two days and can't get a person to talk to. I've also emailed, with no response.

My travel dates would be around 1 Jan 2010 to 23 Jan 2010.

So basically, if anyone has recently ordered one and has the price of a one month tourist visa for a foreigner in the Australian embassy, that'd be great.

My fall back is sending in the passport with money and hoping they tell me the price if they send it back.

Thanks guys!
Hey guys,
I just received a reply from the embassy. The visa costs $75, just in case anyone else was wondering!

yeah, it's $75...

Vietnam Travel Guide: An Introduction To the North Vietnam

Located in the South East extremity of Indochinese peninsula, Vietnam is a beautiful country stretching along the long coastline in a unique shape of an elongated S. The country is divided into three main regions lengthwise, which are the North (mien Bac), the Central (mien Trung) and the South (mien Nam).

The North Vietnam shares borderlines with China in the north east and Laos in the North West. The region covers the country from its Northern top in Ha Giang down to the Hai Van pass in the middle of Vietnam with a lot of wonderful sites.

The weather in North Vietnam comes in four different seasons in a year: Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter. From February to April, Spring lasts as a symbol of fertility with drizzle and warmth that helps plants grow and flowers bloom brightly. From May to August it is Summer time with hot and showery weather. Autumn is considered the most beautiful time in year here with cool air, sunny days which are usually dry and windy. It lasts from September to November. Next comes winter with its dry and cold characters. There's no snow, however the cold is pretty harsh in general.

The best time to visit the North Vietnam is around summer and Autumn when the days are bright and dry and the normal weather is ideal for being on road.

When visiting this region, the must-see sites include Hanoi, Halong bay, Sapa, NinhBinh and HaiPhong...While Hanoi gives tourists an insight about the North Vietnamese life and culture in a booming modern life with a lingering glimpse of its antique past, Halong bay and Sapa are must-sees for its natural beauty and rugged scenery that promise to take tourists' breath away.

In the growing demand for tourism, tourist services in all the major sites are pretty abundant and available, if not over-pushy sometimes. Traveling to the North, as well as any other part of Vietnam, tourists don't have to worry about the availability of hotels in Vietnam, transportations or other services. Hanoi hotels and Sapa hotels are the common choice for accommodation in these cities, while in Halong bay tourists often stay overnight on a Halong cruise.

However, it is recommended that hotels should be booked in advance to avoid sky-high room rates during peak seasons. If the pre-booking is too much hassle, tourists always have an option of motels in case most hotels are fully booked. Be warned that the facilities in Vietnam motels are limited, but they serve the purpose of a place to sleep just fine if that's what tourists are looking for. Nevertheless, in order to get a motel room, some basic Vietnamese would come in handy and is obviously essential.

Whether discovering the crowded city of Hanoi or visiting hill tribes around Sapa, failing to try local cuisines is a great miss.  In Hanoi, Pho, Cha Ca La Vong or Bun Dau Mam Tom all are special dishes that have been a symbol of Hanoians' food for a long time. The same goes for grilled food in Sapa, Goat meat in NinhBinh or seafood in HaiPhong, Halong. Just remember that sometimes in Vietnam, it's not the grandest places that promise the most delicious food. It is the vendors and street food stalls in some street corners that give an authentic taste. But a local insight is needed to find these not-so-grand places.

can you get a multiple entry longer term visa to vietnam as a tourist ?

I want to go out there for a year but don't want to apply for a long tourist visa if it gets rejected as the 30 day one then may be in jeopardy. Any advise anyone?

Come on your tourist visa then after about 2 weeks visit any travel agent and ask them to get for you a 12 month multi-entry visa, check a couple of agents for price but should be about 220usd, very easy to do.

What is the name of the monkey and crocodile park near Saigon, Vietnam?

There is a park I went to in Vietnam where there were hundreds of monkeys. You can walk into the park and feed the monkeys. You can also take a boat ride to a Viet Cong jungle base that is setup for tourists.

its in CAN GIO, about 3hrs from sai gon by bus. its in the delta area and you'll have to do a cpl of ferry crossings. if you go be sure to take a cannal boat trip in the park. there is also a zoo right in distric 1 in sai gon city .. i'm sure it has monkeys and gators... in fact sai gon has a few parks that may have some animals.....i may have the name burried someplace in my "suff" if i find it , i'll find you.... di choi vui ve [ have a nice trip]

What are some must sees in Saigon/Ho Chi Minh City?

My wife and I are going to Vietnam in less than 2 months and are obviously excited. Some of the time will be spent visiting her family, but what sort of things, tourist wise and locally that are can't misses for this trip? Any advice would be great!

Well, those are ok ideas, but I advise you to take a couple of days, at least, and get out of Saigon; Da Lat (6 hour bus ride), or Mui Ne (4hr bus or train), or Nha Trang (8 hr bus or train). Really, once you've seen your first 10 or so cathedrals, the experience begins to pall. You really should see some of the countryside, for which Da Lat is great, the other 2, particularly just going to Mui Ne, is-rare in Viet Nam-pretty boring scenery. But both Mui Ne and Nha Trang are very nice oceanside destinations.

For very little money, you could leave for Da Lat one morning, stay at a hotel there, leave for Nha Trang the next day, hotel, kill the next day, take a train back to Saigon that night (soft sleeper), and get in very early morning. 3 days. Maybe $125 in hotels and transportation combined. And you'll have seen some of Viet Nam, besides the city.

However, if your particular city does not have a Vietnamese Embassy, and you wish to avoid procedural delays (anywhere from 4 to 10 days) which sometimes happen with visa approvals at embassies outside Vietnam, vietnamvisasupport.com can make this requirement a fairly easy exercise. We provide a specialized form which you may copy and paste into a word document, fill out the required information and return to us by fax or email. We will then arrange to obtain the visa approval code service for you. Yet, you still subsequently have to get the official Vietnamese Stamp of with your passport to the Embassy or Consulate to get the Visa Stamp on your passport on the same day. You are now ready to go to Vietnam!

In case there is no Vietnam embassy or Consulate in your country, or you would like to make Vietnam part of a multi-destination trip, we recommend Visa upon Arrival as your best option.

What is a 'Visa upon Arrival?': this is probably the easiest way to obtain your visa without having to chase down embassies, consulates and the like prior to your trip. It is a valid alternative when applying for a tourist visa. The Entry Visa will be stamped on your passport as you pass through our Immigration Checkpoint. Though valid for thirty days, it can be extended once you enter Viet Nam. With this type of visa, you only can enter the country by air.

How to get a Visa upon Arrival: The service also facilitates customers at most in this case. We obtain what is called an Approval Letter for you from the Viet Nam Immigration Department. Then we will send you a copy by fax or email. Copies of the same document will be forwarded on your behalf to Vietnam Immigration Checkpoints at International Airports only. Thus when you arrive in Viet Nam, the Immigration officers will have those documents on hand and will be able to issue your Entry Visa expediently.

Tourist Vietnam

tourist vietnam_3"tourist vietnam"
How much would a beer cost at a tourist area of Vietnam?

Do you mean tourist areas as in those that pay big dollars, stay in 4 star posh hotels and book ahead, or those that go to the "back packer" tourist area and pay less that $15 a night?

Areas of tourists are split 3 ways.... the economy areas which are main tourist areas, posh areas with the 4 and 5 star hotels where visiting government dignitaries might stay, and then then there are the places tourists go and congregate... ie tourist attractions.

In the posh areas, expect at least $2 a beer.

In back packer / budget areas, expect upwards from $1

But you can't go past Bia Hoi... Shop around and you can find some that sell as low as 3 cents a glass. Most commonly, just under a dollar a litre.

Bia Hoi is similar to what you might find similar to a micro brewery. No name brand, and the recipe, taste and alcohol content vary from place to place. Most Bia Hoi sits around 5% alcohol. Some has been known to come in at over 9%. In other words, some of the brews have bells on them !! Wooo Hoo...!!

Get blind rotten drunk and still have change out of a dollar.
