Travel Guide & Travel Tips For Southern Vietnam

Of the three regions of Vietnam, the South is the closest to the equator. The region consists of 17 provinces from BinhPhuoc down to Ca Mau and two big cities: Ho Chi Minh city and Can Tho city.

The two sub-regions that add up to the South are the Eastern South and the Mekong river delta. Even though lying entirely within the tropic area, climate in Vietnam varies from region to region. While people from the mountainous Sapa up north might be seeking shelter from snow, the urban dwellers of Ho Chi Minh city down in the south would be seeking refuge from mid-day heat.

There are two main seasons of wet rainy and dry in the South. While the rain last from April to September, the dry weather takes span of months from October to May. In rainy season, it is usually brightly sunny in mornings and heavy but quick rains pouring down in late afternoons. In dry season, the sun shines all day and the weather is extremely hot. However, the temperature cools down apparently at nights.

Ho Chi Minh can be considered the capital in the South Vietnam with modern city and bustling businesses. In the South Vietnam, tourists can have city tours around Ho Chi Minh City (formerly known as Saigon) or cruise along the Mekong river delta for a taste of floating life.

Ho Chi Minh city is a heaven for enjoying night life, visiting war remembrance, tasting traditional food and shopping spree. As the biggest and most developed city in Vietnam, hotels in Ho Chi Minh are available in all price ranges, from luxury hotels Saigon to cheap ones.

To cover the Mekong river delta when traveling in Vietnam, the best way for foreign tourists is to use a Mekong cruise. With various itineraries, Mekong river cruises cover all the major attractions of Mekong river delta and sometimes some attractions in Cambodia are added as well. Being on a cruise, tourists will be able to experience the life of locals that mostly spend floating on the river. The floating markets with fresh fruits and other commodities traded from boats to boats are something worth experiencing during Mekong cruise tours.

The best time to visit weather-wise the region is the dry season between December and April, when the humidity is more manageable. The clouds start getting heavy around November and stay through March. The Tet Festival in late January or early February is an exciting, if extremely hectic, time to visit.
